Independent beats Republican, Democrat in Alabama race
Hamilton, on Tuesday, became the first independent candidate elected to a position in Franklin County.
"Running as an independent isn't a viable option on the state or national level, but when you're talking about students, it's good to not have to deal with politics," Hamilton said.
Bart Moss, the Republican candidate, finished 436 votes behind Hamilton.
Republican Party officials say they don't have a definitive explanation for Hamilton's win, except he worked hard and ran a well-organized campaign.
Hamilton, who has 21 years in education, all in Vina, is currently assistant principal at Vina High School.
With three children in the Franklin County system (his oldest is in college), it adds to his desire to see the system improve.
