McPhee pumps 28 as Stanford knocks off No. 8 Texas 71-59
McPhee scored a career-high 28 points as the No. 11 Cardinal pulled away from No. 8 Texas in the second half for a convincing 71-59 win at Maples Pavilion.
McPhee, driving to the basket aggressively and scoring with either hand, hit 11 of 15 shots from the floor, including both her three-point tries.
Erica McCall contributed 17 points, five rebounds and six blocks for the Cardinal (2-0), who outshot the Longhorns 55 percent to 35.
McPhee thought about a three at one point but drove for a lefty layup that pushed the lead to 48-39 with 5:15 left in the quarter.
Atkins, a smooth lefty, hit from the corner to open the second quarter, and Texas moved to a 24-19 lead.
The Cardinal rallied as McPhee fed McCall for a layup, and Karlie Samuelson sank her only three of the half, tying it 24-24.
Brooke McCarty’s turn-around jumper put Texas up 26-14 before an 11-3 Stanford run led by McPhee brought a 35-28 lead, the largest of the half.
