Red Sox acquire Chris Sale in deal with White Sox

The reloading Red Sox pulled off the biggest deal yet at the winter meetings, acquiring the dominant left-hander from the Chicago White Sox Tuesday for a hefty package of four prospects.

Sale joined an already stocked rotation with the AL East champions, now pitching alongside 2016 AL Young Award winner Rick Porcello, former winner David Price and knuckleballer Steven Wright.

The 27-year-old has been an All-Star in each of the past five seasons, finishing high in Cy Young Award voting every time, but has not appeared in the postseason.

To get him, Boston traded high-priced third baseman Yoan Moncada, considered by many one of the top young players in baseball, along with outfielder Luis Basabe and pitchers Michael Kopech and Victor Diaz.

Red Sox get reliever, too: A few hours earlier, Boston got prime setup man Tyler Thornburg from Milwaukee.

The ballots of individual voters for the Hall of Fame will be released publicly, starting with the election results announced in January 2018.
