7-film tribute to Roald Dahl at Yerba Buena Center

Visionary animator Henry Selick’s 1996 take on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book “James and the Giant Peach” closes out the first weekend of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts’ seven-film tribute to Dahl (1916-90) on Sunday, Dec. 11.

The series, which showcases a striking variety of films inspired by Dahl, kicks off Thursday, Dec. 8, with a dream collaboration between producer Jim Henson, director Nicolas Roeg and actress Anjelica Huston in 1990’s “The Witches” (also shown Friday, Dec. 9).

Finish with Steven Spielberg’s unapologetically sweet new children’s film “The BFG” on Dec. 18.

The two Dahl films that fueled my childhood imagination play Saturday, Dec. 10: “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” (God bless you, Gene Wilder), and the James Bond classic “You Only Live Twice” with a script by Dahl (top marks, Sean Connery).
