Asian themes in CaselDance piece
The GeraldCaselDance home season opens with three works at ODC Theater.
“Cover Your Mouth When You Smile,” is a collaboration with Seoul and Hong Kong choreographer Na-ye Kim that deals with racial melancholia; “Thirdperson” uses “tonality as a choreographic construct to induce perceived narratives”; and a the 2010 “Fluster” is being restaged.
“In ‘Cover Your Mouth,’ we explore our shared experiences of being the only person of color in the room,” says Casel.
[...] we investigate the degree to which we, as artists of Asian descent, have been part of a system that regards diversity through binary modes of thinking, meaning we were often passed over as not being ‘ethnic enough.’
