Serra falls to Sierra Canyon in state 2-A championship game
The Padres gave it their all at Hornet Stadium on Saturday, but fell to Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth 42-40 in the Division 2-A state championship game at Sacramento State.
Leki Nunn, Serra’s senior quarterback, accounted for 440 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.
[...] each time, the Trailblazers (16-0) responded immediately, first with a 95-yard kickoff return by J.J. Hernandez, and later with a touchdown pass from Niko Harris to Dylan Tait.
[...] they had Bobby Cole, a senior running back who rushed 30 times for 220 yards and four touchdowns.
[...] the kickoff return, two missed extra points and a two-point conversion pass that was caught inches out of bounds left the Padres short of victory.
Down 21-20 at halftime, Serra took its second lead when it began the second half by marching 62 yards in eight plays, a drive that ended with Nunn’s 2-yard TD run.
Harris led Sierra Canyon on an eight-play, 58-yard drive, capping it with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tait.
On the two-point conversion, Charlie Quinn caught the ball but was out of the end zone.
Yet back came Serra, which drove 70 yards in 52 seconds for a score — Nunn’s 3-yard TD run with 2:06 left.
