The Voyage Home: As part of the occasional “Science on Screen” series at the Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael, conservationist Mary Jane Schramm will precede a 35mm screening of the 1986 San Francisco-shot film with a presentation on humpback whales.
The Klingons were the Soviets; the Federation of Planets was the United Nations, and the Starship Enterprise was the logical extension of the Gemini and Apollo space programs.

Festival of French Animated Films: A 10-film festival curated by Alliance Française of Silicon Valley opens at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4, with a screening of the Oscar-nominated 2012 film from Belgium, “Ernest and Celestine,” and continues with a day of screenings beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, with a program of nine short films followed by the features “Mr. Hublot” and “A Cat in Paris.”
