Barry Bonds: the Marlins, not the Giants?
Bonds hasn’t played for eight seasons, and the Giants used his on-field services for one week in spring training of 2014, when the home run king’s work with hitters was well-received.
[...] Bonds could be close to becoming a Miami batting coach, working with current hitting coach Frank Menechino and under new manager Don Mattingly.
Bonds, whose link to steroid use has kept him from the Hall of Fame — the Giants haven’t included him on their Wall of Fame — has appeared at several games in recent years, and the sides have said they’ve had ongoing talks about a role in the organization, but nothing materialized.
CEO Larry Baer has said he’d be open to Bonds taking an advisory or special-assistant role similar to the Giants’ other legends, making appearances on and off the field, including with sponsors.
Bonds happened by Michael Morse before the Giants’ 2014 pennant-clincher, and Morse later credited Bonds for technical advice he received that led to his monumental, game-tying pinch homer.
The Giants haven’t brought back Bonds, though his obstruction-of-justice conviction was reversed and his collusion case against the MLB owners was decided.
There might be no one better to teach hitting, and the Marlins are jumping at the opportunity.
