Finish investigation, then seal deal
The conversation seemed untoward while Major League Baseball continues to investigate an alleged domestic-abuse incident involving Chapman at his Miami-area home in October.
According to a police report, Chapman’s girlfriend, the mother of his child, told officers that the 27-year-old pitcher choked her and threw her against a wall during an argument.
No charges were filed because the girlfriend did not want to pursue them, and also because of conflicting accounts and the lack of physical injuries on the alleged victim.
Baseball officials are investigating Chapman, as well as the Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig and Rockies’ Jose Reyes relating to other alleged incidents.
Logic suggests the Yankees made a few phone calls to gauge where baseball’s investigation is headed, but domestic abuse is so heinous a crime, and baseball so visible an entity, the outcome needs to be illuminated publicly.
The Dodgers initially had a deal for Chapman but backed off once Yahoo Sports reported the alleged incident.
