The Federal Reserve held the benchmark interest rate unchanged at a 23-year high of 5.25% to 5.50% at its last rate-setting meeting on May 1, keeping APYs on certificates of deposit and other high-yield accounts at their highest in decades. But if key inflation and consumer spending updates released this week indicate progress toward the Fed's 2% inflation goal, APYs on CDs could fall soon.

The Federal Reserve decided for the sixth straight time to hold the benchmark interest rate unchanged at a 23-year high of 5.25% to 5.50% at its last rate-setting meeting on May 1, keeping APYs on deposit accounts like high-yield savings accounts at their highest in decades. But if key inflation and consumer spending updates released this week indicate progress toward the Fed's 2% inflation goal, it could mean a drop in today's highest savings rates. 

Mortgage rates on popular 30-year and 15-year terms are down as of Monday, May 13, 2024, after last week's softer-than-expected employment report and ahead of new inflation data due for release this week that, if indicating improvement, could influence whether the Fed cuts rates later this year.
