The future warhead to replace submarine-launched Trident systems will be developed as a “sovereign” capability and “in parallel” with the US W93/Mk7 warhead, according to the Defence Nuclear Enterprise Command Paper.
“It also shows how dangerous it is to equip a networked actor such as the Houthis with such a capability. The consequences for regional security are problematic,” an analyst told Breaking Defense.
The milestone comes as the Large Unmanned Surface Vessel program faces steep budget cuts.
The biggest pot of money sought is for a program whose details are listed as “Description withheld. Classified topic. Materials available at higher level.”
Among the unclassified programs listed, the Space Force could use an additional $160 million to establish a “working capital fund” to be used for purchasing commercial satellite communications.
