Facebook helps find fun events going on around you

Computerworld

Want some help figuring out what to do tonight or this weekend?

Facebook executives are hoping that's exactly what you'll want to do.

The social networking company is testing an events service designed to help users find things to do around their location.

Facebook said the new Event service is available only on the iPhone. Читать дальше...

Cloud, virtualization take toll on data centers

Computerworld

The data center is transforming -- modernizing to meet business demand as technologies such as software-defined architecture, cloud and virtualization take hold. IDG Contributor Network: Deathmatch: The mobile Web vs. mobile apps

Computerworld

A great way for technology pundits to attract attention is to predict the death of a popular technology. Over the past couple of years there have been a slew of columns and blog posts prophesying the demise of the mobile Web at the hands of mobile apps (one pundit sees apps dominating users' attention, another predicts apps will kill off the entire Web)  -- or the demise of mobile apps at the hands of the mobile Web (one company argues that app development rarely pays off, while this journalist... Computerworld

Back in the distant past (about 20 years ago), I became involved with a small manufacturing business that had to make do with the rudimentary business software offerings that existed at the time. Like other small businesses, our options consisted of either adopting the existing monolithic "suites" or using paper-based solutions. There was one other solution, the creation of a fully custom solution using a database offering such as FileMaker. Indeed, a related company had done just that and I can... Читать дальше...

Here comes 'Desktopgeddon'

Computerworld

You don't hear much about the so-called "Mobilegeddon" anymore. On April 21, Google changed its search engine to prefer sites deemed "mobile-friendly." In the aftermath, reports (including one from Adobe Systems) found that non-mobile-friendly sites suffered a 12% drop in traffic after the change.
