[Ticker] Turkey suspends European convention on human rights

Turkey announced it will suspend the European convention of human rights throughout a self-imposed state of emergency following an apparent coup attempt. Deputy prime minister Numan Kurtulmus announced the suspension on the state-run Anadolu news agency. Turkey has purged thousands of people from state institutions in the wake of the events.

Turkey's mounting crackdown following a failed coup attempt "flouts the rule of law" said Germany's chief spokesperson Steffen Seibert. Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has launched a purge that has seen over 50,000 people in the public sector detained or fired. Erdogan has also announced a three-month state of emergency.

[Ticker] Twenty two people dead in Mediterranean

Some 22 people were found dead "in a pool of fuel and water" on a boat in the Mediterranean off the coast of Libya by the aid agency group, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). All but one of the dead were women. Another 200 people were rescued from the same boat, says MSF.

The French government on Wednesday used a measure to force through a bill on labour reforms in parliament without a vote, reports Le Monde. The bill is set to be adopted on Thursday afternoon if unchallenged. The law will make it easier to fire people, weakens trade union powers, and extends working hours per week.
