Myanmar: Military Forcibly Recruiting Rohingya, Says HRW

Eurasia Review

The Myanmar military has abducted and forcibly recruited more than 1,000 Rohingya Muslim men and boys from across Rakhine State since February 2024, Human Rights Watch said. The junta is using a conscription law that only applies to Myanmar citizens, although the Rohingya have long been denied citizenship under the 1982 Citizenship Law.

Did Lockdowns Set A Global Revolt In Motion? – OpEd

Eurasia Review

My first article on the coming backlash – admittedly wildly optimistic – went to print April 24, 2020. After 6 weeks of lockdown, I confidently predicted a political revolt, a movement against masks, a population-wide revulsion against the elites, a demand to reject “social distancing” and streaming-only life, plus widespread disgust at everything and everyone involved.

Biden’s Inflation Narrative Dies As Price Growth Rises To A Seven-Month High

Eurasia Review

By Ryan McMaken

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest price inflation data, CPI inflation in March rose to a seven-month high, and price inflation hasn’t proven nearly as transitory as the regime’s economists have long predicted.

According to the BLS, Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rose 3.5 percent year over year during March, without seasonal adjustment. That’s the thirty-seventh month in a row of inflation well above the Fed’s arbitrary 2 percent inflation target. Читать дальше...

EU-Seychelles Accord Could Slow Indian Ocean Drug Trade – Analysis

Eurasia Review

By Carina Bruwer

In October 2023, Seychelles and the European Union (EU) agreed to allow the EU Naval Force to transfer suspected drugs and weapons traffickers in Seychelles waters and on the high seas to Seychelles for prosecution. Similar accords allow EU navies to transfer piracy suspects to Seychelles for trial.

Such bilateral agreements enable countries globally to navigate the unique legal and practical challenges of dealing with drug trafficking at sea. They typically... Читать дальше...

Bernie Sanders: Aid into Gaza Is Long Overdue, Now End The Weapons Sales – OpEd

Eurasia Review

The United Nations has reported that 28 children have died of malnutrition and dehydration in Gaza thus far. The real total is likely much higher. More than one million people in Gaza face “catastrophic food insecurity,” and more than 50,000 children are acutely malnourished. In other words, the people of Gaza are starving. Without a dramatic influx of food, water, and medicine, many thousands more innocent men, women, and children will perish. This is morally unacceptable and must end NOW.

Maritime Menace: Resurgence Of Somali Piracy – Analysis

Eurasia Review

By Gurjit Singh

Since November 2023, about 25 cases of attacks on ships linked to piracy have taken place. This has brought attention again to piracy off the Somalia coast in the Gulf of Aden. Due to this, the demand and cost of armed security patrols on international shipping, the costs of insurance coverage, and the cost of covering possible ransom payments have increased. These attacks come alongside attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels. This has the potential... Читать дальше...

Philippines’ Marcos Denies ‘Gentleman’s Agreement’ With Beijing Over South China Sea

Eurasia Review

By Jason Gutierrez

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday denied the existence of a “gentleman’s agreement” between his predecessor, Rodrigo Duterte, and China that Manila would not make repairs to a rusting military outpost in a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

Duterte’s former spokesman, Harry Roque, has said that the previous Philippine government entered into a deal with Beijing to keep the “status quo” in the waterway, which has become the scene of... Читать дальше...

Telephone Terrorism Returns To Russia, Lengthening Shadow Of Crocus City Hall Attack – OpEd

Eurasia Review

In the past few days, what Russian officials refer to as “telephone terrorism” – the calling in of warnings that bombs have been placed in various public institutions — has returned to Russia, forcing officials to evacuate a variety many and adding to the climate of fear that arose in the wake of the Crocus City Hall attacks.

New Militarism: Biden Is Doing Very Things He Criticized During His Campaign – OpEd

Eurasia Review

By Jonathan Power*

“Diplomacy is back”, President Joe Biden said shortly after becoming president. But then, in the middle of a delicate diplomatic dance with Iran, he went and bombed a small, politically inconsequential, Iranian surrogate in Syria in retaliation for the killing of one American soldier.

This seemed to go against everything he said during his presidential campaign on moving towards fashioning a quick agreement with Iran so that the deal made by President Barack... Читать дальше...

China’s Options In Response To The ‘Overcapacity’ Pressure Imposed by The US – Analysis

Eurasia Review

By He Jun

At the beginning of her six-day visit to China, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen raised an important issue of concern for the United States, i.e., China's "overcapacity" problem. From American perspective, under the subsidy mechanism of the Chinese government, China has experienced overcapacity in certain industries, and Chinese companies are exporting products to the U.S. at extremely low prices, posing a threat to relevant sectors of American businesses.

Libya’s Feuding Leaders Ensure Political Stalemate Continues – OpEd

Eurasia Review

By Talmiz Ahmad

At a conclave convened in Cairo by the Arab League last month, Libya’s three principal leaders jointly agreed on the “necessity” of forming a new unified government that would supervise the long-delayed national elections and provide a modicum of unity to a country that has been deeply divided for more than 10 years and destabilized by armed activity by largely independent military factions. The three leaders recognized that Libyans were anxious to have elections and... Читать дальше...

Industrial Policy Is Not A Magic Cure For Slow Growth – Analysis

Eurasia Review

Many countries are ramping up industrial policy to boost innovation in specific sectors in the hope of reigniting productivity and long-term growth, amid security concerns. Major initiatives are springing up around the world, such as the United States’ CHIPS and Science Act, which will fund domestic research and semiconductor manufacturing, the European Union’s Green Deal Industrial Plan, which supports the bloc’s transition to climate neutrality, the New Direction on Economy and Industrial Policy in Japan... UN Receives Report On ‘Alarming’ Rise Of Neo‑Nazi Groups In Brazil

Eurasia Review

By Léo Rodrigues

Brazil’s National Human Rights Council, linked to the Ministry of Human Rights, has shown concerns to the United Nations about the growth of neo-Nazi groups in the country over the last few years. The document classifies the current scenario as “alarming.”

In its report, the council gathers data from a number of surveys, including research by anthropologist Adriana Dias, who died last year. She found that neo-Nazi group cells surged by 270.6 percent in Brazil from January 2019 to May 2021... Читать дальше...

Foundation Releases Never-Before-Seen Images Of Padre Pio

Eurasia Review

By Zoe Romanowsky

To mark its 10th anniversary, the Saint Pio Foundation in the United States is releasing 10 never-before-seen photographs of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, better known as Padre Pio, on April 29.

The candid images show the Italian priest celebrating Mass and deep in prayer but also in lighter moments of laughter, rarely captured of the friar. The foundation’s director, Luciano Lamonarca, discovered the photos when visiting photographer Elia Saleto’s studio.
