Can New UN Envoy Avoid Past Mediation Failures In Myanmar? – Analysis

Eurasia Review

By Nicola Williams

Australia’s former foreign minister Julie Bishop takes on a challenging role as the recently appointed UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar. To avoid joining the high-level graveyard of UN envoys, diplomats and ASEAN leaders who have tried and failed to negotiate with the junta, she must remember the lessons learnt from over a decade of international peacebuilding and failed mediation efforts.

Bishop should avoid advocating for high-level track-one negotiations to solve Myanmar’s civil war.

Eurasia Review

By Graham J Noble

Various parties on the left side of the political divide, for a variety of reasons, are coming to the uncomfortable conclusion that all is not well in these United States of America, that the administration of Joe Biden has fallen short on just about all the significant issues. They are faced with a barrage of worrying presidential polling results and the increasing likelihood that their nemesis, the supervillain (as they see him) Donald Trump may indeed return to the White House in January of 2025. The Greater Middle East Is A Ticking Time Bomb (Part I) – Analysis

Eurasia Review

The Greater Middle East is a ticking time bomb.

The region’s most apparent powder keg – the risk of a regional conflagration between Israel and Iran that could draw the United States and regional countries like Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Yemen, and Gulf states into the conflict – is foremost on policy and opinion makers’ minds. So is the war in Gaza with its devastating humanitarian fallout. (To read Part II click here)

Yet, simmering at the surface in Gaza and across much of the Middle East and North Africa is social... Читать дальше...

Concerns Over Militant Group JI’s Revival After Suspect Kills 2 Malaysian Policemen

Eurasia Review

By Iman Muttaqin Yusof and Nisha David

Malaysian security analysts raised concerns Friday about the resurgence of the Jemaah Islamiyah militant group following a long dormancy, after a suspected member killed two constables in a pre-dawn attack at a police station in Johor.

Movements such as JI, a Muslim extremist group affiliated with al-Qaeda, tend to stay underground for extended periods as they wait for the “right moment” to strike and make a point – and now may be that time – intelligence experts said. Читать дальше...

The Toughest Job Today’s Richest Ever Face? – OpEd

Eurasia Review

Once upon a time, back in the middle of the 20th century, the smallest theater on Broadway could have comfortably accommodated a get-together of all the New Yorkers worth at least $100 million. Not anymore. Broadway’s landmark Helen Hayes Theater holds a mere 597 seats. The number of “centi-millionaires” who currently call the City of New York home: 744.

South African President Backs National Health Plan For All – OpEd

Eurasia Review

By Lisa Vives

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is promoting a long-awaited new law that would provide universal health care free of charge for all. It could lead to the biggest shake-up in the health sector since the end of the racist system of apartheid 30 years ago.

The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has strenuously opposed the president’s plan, calling it the “death warrant” of health care in South Africa. They say the plan could be hugely expensive and fuel corruption. Читать дальше...
