Suarez comes off bench for brace as Miami beat DC without Messi

France24.com (en)

Suarez continued his prolific start to life in MLS with his sixth goal in seven games in all competitions for the South Florida club. Miami had failed to win their last seven games without Messi, a run dating to September, but despite that record, coach Gerardo Martino left Suarez and Jordi Alba on the bench. Of the four ex-Barcelona stars available to Martino, only Spanish midfielder Sergio Busquets started at Audi Field and the home side sensed the chance for an upset. That belief increased when Jared Stroud scored for D.C. United... Читать дальше...

'Extraordinary' Vinicius hits brace as Madrid distance Girona

France24.com (en)

The Brazilian forward mesmerised for Los Blancos and reached 18 goals across all competitions this season, while Dani Carvajal and Brahim Diaz also found the net in an entertaining romp for Carlo Ancelotti's side. Girona, second, were undone by Yellu Santiago's first half strike and have now suffered four consecutive away defeats -- started by a demoralising 4-0 thrashing at Madrid. Third-place Barcelona, 11 points behind Madrid, travel to face Atletico Madrid, fifth, and can overtake Girona with a victory on Sunday. Читать дальше...

Philipsen edges razor-thin Milan-San Remo sprint

France24.com (en)

Belgian Philipsen used the bike throw manoeuvre right on the line to pip Matthews with two-time Tour de France winner Pogacar promising to come back and win next year. The Alpecin-Deceuninck sprinter Philipsen was always the man to beat if the race came to a bunch finish, and he charged to the line with twelve other riders crossing within a second of each-other after six hours 14min 44sec of racing. The Belgian was swift to praise his team-mate Mathieu van der Poel, who made the early sprint running... Читать дальше...

Getafe further damage Girona's fading title dream

France24.com (en)

Yellu Santiago's 33rd minute strike means Real Madrid lead the league by 10 points ahead of second place Girona, after their 4-2 win at Osasuna earlier on. Getafe, despite the absence of top goalscorer Borja Mayoral, were able to inflict a fourth consecutive away defeat on Michel Sanchez's side. Ivan Martin came close in the first half for Girona while Mason Greenwood, on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, fired narrowly off target at the other end. The hosts took the lead through young midfielder Santiago... Читать дальше...

Gatland's resignation offer rejected after Italy defeat

France24.com (en)

Wales coach Gatland said the side had reached "rock bottom" after a 24-21 defeat by Italy in Cardiff on Saturday meant they had lost all five of their matches in this tournament and 12 of their past 13 Six Nations encounters in total. The Principality Stadium reverse prompted Gatland, in his second spell as Wales boss, to offer his resignation to Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Abi Tierney even though the 60-year-old New Zealander is contracted until the 2027 World Cup in Australia. Asked if he wanted to see out his current deal... Читать дальше...

Ireland hold on to Six Nations trophy after Wales boss Gatland offers to quit

France24.com (en)

Irish hopes of back-to-back Grand Slams were dashed by last week's dramatic 23-22 loss to England at Twickenham. But they knew that if they avoided defeat, or secured two bonus points, against a Scotland side fresh from a morale-sapping 31-29 defeat by Italy in Rome, they would keep hold of the title. The Scots, however, still had a trophy to play for given they were bidding for their first Triple Crown -- when one of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales beats each of those other teams in a single championship season -- since 1990. Philipsen hails Van der Poel after Milan-San Remo triumph

France24.com (en)

Philipsen pipped Michael Matthews to the line on the Italian Riviera after fellow Alpecin-Deceuninck rider and reigning world champion Van der Poel kept him in the race in the closing kilometres. "Mathieu is the last person to think about himself... What he did is something I will always remember and I will always be thankful because it will probably be my only chance to win a monument," said Philipsen. "I'm really grateful for what he did." Asked whether he would have won without Van der Poel, a delighted Philipsen said: "Probably not". Читать дальше...

More than 90,000 people have been displaced in southern Lebanon by the ongoing, near-daily clashes on the border with Israel since the Gaza war broke out in October 2023. Luton rescue draw with Forest as Burnley keep survival hopes alive

France24.com (en)

As the fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League comes to a head, Luton and Forest met in a potentially decisive showdown at Kenilworth Road. Forest, beaten in their previous three games, took the lead through Chris Wood's first-half strike. But Berry came off the bench to equalise with just one minute to play in normal time. Third-bottom Luton, who blew a three-goal lead in Wednesday's disastrous 4-3 defeat at Bournemouth, are without a win in their last nine games in all competitions. Читать дальше...

'Extraordinary' Vinicius strikes twice as leaders Madrid thrash Osasuna

France24.com (en)

The Brazilian forward mesmerised for Los Blancos and reached 18 goals across all competitions this season, while Dani Carvajal and Brahim Diaz also found the net in an entertaining romp for Carlo Ancelotti's side. Girona, second, visit Getafe later Saturday, while third-place Barcelona, 11 points behind Madrid, travel to face Atletico Madrid on Sunday. Madrid were without top goalscorer Jude Bellingham, completing a two-match suspension but, with Vinicius in full flow, barely missed the England international at El Sadar in Pamplona. FRANCE 24's Catherine Norris Trent reports from Jerusalem.

Italy condemn Wales to Six Nations whitewash

France24.com (en)

Defeat also meant Wales finished last in a Six Nations for the first time since that woeful 2003 campaign and was a sad way for George North, who went off injured late on, to bow out from Test rugby in the powerhouse back's final match before international retirement. But for Italy, victory meant they had their best return in a Six Nations of two wins and a draw, with this victory following last weekend's 31-29 defeat of Scotland in Rome and a 13-13 thriller with France. It also ensured the Azzurri... Читать дальше...

Canada reimposes visas for Mexicans following spike in asylum claims

France24.com (en)

Canada announced on February 29 the immediate reimposition of visas for visiting Mexican nationals in response to a recent jump in asylum claims from the country – a move decried by Mexico which is now considering reciprocal actions. Immigration data showed Mexicans made up 17 percent of all refugee claims in Canada in 2023. The number spiked from just 260 claims in 2016 when a previous visa requirement was lifted, to nearly 24,000 last year. Most of the recent claims were rejected or withdrawn by the applicants.

'Bloody' Ramadan Friday as Gaza strike kills 36 relatives

France24.com (en)

An air strike hit the building where they were staying as women prepared the pre-fasting meal, killing 36 members of the family, survivors told AFP on Saturday. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, which provided the same death toll, blamed Israel for the strike in Nuseirat, while the Israeli military said it was looking into the incident. "This is my mother, this is my father, this is my aunt, and these are my brothers," 19-year-old Mohammed al-Tabatibi, whose left hand was injured in the strike... Читать дальше...

But after Swenn-Larsson failed to nail her second run Shiffrin topped the podium by 0.54s from Norway's Mina Fuerst Holtmann, who was placed only eighth at the midway point. After landing her 60th World Cup slalom, Shiffrin, who turned 29 this week, was all smiles as she collected her favourite discipline's crystal globe trophy. Shiffrin arrived at the... PSG 'favourites' in Champions League clash: Barca coach Xavi

France24.com (en)

The Catalans, five-time winners of the competition, face former coach Luis Enrique's French champions, but although PSG are still looking to win the trophy for the first time, Xavi believes they are the stronger side. "I'd give them the favourites tag -- we have won more Champions Leagues, but the economic situation they are in, signing players (compared to) what we can spend, it's not the same situation," Xavi told a news conference. "They won't beat us on hope, desire, and dreaming though, we... Читать дальше...

Aid deliveries by sea and air 'complementary' to land transportation, not a 'substitute'

France24.com (en)

As the first aid boat to reach Gaza unloaded its cargo in the war-ravaged Strip Saturday, humanitarian groups continued to stress the importance of aid deliveries by land. “The aid delivered by sea or by air should be seen as complementary to land transportation, not as a substitute because these methods can’t replace the volumes that aid trucks by land can deliver,” Norwegian Refugee Council Middle East Head of Advocacy Samah Hadid told FRANCE 24.

A post-flight inspection revealed a missing panel on a Boeing 737-800 that had just arrived at its destination in southern Oregon on Friday after flying from San Francisco, officials said, the latest in a series of recent incidents involving aircraft manufactured by the company. While the plane landed safely without incident, a panel was missing from the aircraft's underside where the wing meets the fuselage, next to the landing gear.

Odermatt error scuppers giant slalom clean sweep quest

France24.com (en)

The 26-year-old, who had led after the first run, failed to finish the second at Saalbach to gift the win to Loic Meillard. Up to his uncharacteristic error Odermatt had been in line to sweep all 10 World Cup giant slaloms this season, a feat not achieved since Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark in 1979. Odermatt arrived at the World Cup finals in Austria having extended his giant slalom winning streak -- stretching back to last season -- to 12 in swashbuckling style in Aspen on March 2. The freshly-minted... Читать дальше...
