Palestinian statehood 'would be a symbol but not effective'

As Spain begins a push for EU countries to recognise Palestinian statehood, Jean de Gliniasty, senior research fellow at the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs and a former French ambassador, tells France 24 that such a move would be unlikely to result in a two-state solution at the United Nations and would therfore be mostly symbolic.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez insisted that the recognition of a Palestinian state, long resisted by Israel and its key allies, is "in Europe's geopolitical interests". "The international community cannot help the Palestinian state if it does not recognise its existence," Sanchez told lawmakers Wednesday. It is just the latest call for the recognition of a Palestinian state dating back to the 1947 UN partition plan, explains France 24's Shirli Sitbon.
