Biden's call to order on US campus protests 'ironic', students say

France24.com (en)

President Joe Biden broke his silence Thursday on pro-Palestinian protests on US campuses in recent weeks, saying "order must prevail" despite acknowledging students’ right to protest. “I think it’s interesting that a country that is helping to facilitate an illegal military occupation of Palestinian land is now calling out protesters for also occupying land on college campuses where they pay tuition,” Anyssa Dhaouadi of the Palestinian Youth Movement at George Washington University told FRANCE 24’s Fraser Jackson. France24.com (en)

Playing in a seventh straight final, Sydney lifted the trophy for a fifth time -- the first team to achieve the feat -- on the back of Connors' 69th minute strike at AAMI Park in Melbourne. "It's so special, it's been such a hard year," said Connors, who has struggled with injury this season. "I'm just so proud that we got here (to the final). "The way we defended was probably better then the goal itself," she added. Neither side could break the deadlock in a scrappy first-half, with few genuine... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

Dozens of rappers have been arrested in Iran since the rise of hip-hop in the country in the early 2000s. But the death sentence pronounced on April 24 against the rapper Toomaj Salehi marks a turning point in the Iranian regime’s intolerance of artists with a political message. Exiled rap artists Justina and Ghogha told FRANCE 24 of their admiration for Salehi, "who scares the powers that be".

Athletics as a sport has found itself, at times, struggling against the multitude of other sports and activities on offer. Netflix series showcasing Formula One, golf and tennis have proved very popular and World Athletics president Coe is hoping the six episodes based around sprinting, with last year's world championships in Budapest as the backdrop, will have the same effect. "It was really interesting when I spoke to the Netflix guys," Coe said in Nassau ahead of the World Athletics Relays.... Читать дальше...

France24.com (en)

One settler arrived recently near sunset on a hilltop near the village of Deir Jarir, wearing a black shirt and a green headscarf, like many Palestinian farmers, they said. "The settlers imitate us in every way," said Abdullah Abu Rahme, a member of a Palestinian anti-settler group, who said the hardliners also employ violence and "throw stones at us and block roads". One local man, Haidar Abu Makho, 50, looked sadly across to a hill where settlers' sheep were now grazing, in the rural area near Ramallah. Читать дальше...

Heatwave hammers Thailand's stinky but lucrative durian farms

France24.com (en)

Among Thailand's most famous and lucrative exports, the pungent "king of fruits" is as distinctive in its smell as its spiky green-brown carapace, and has been farmed in the kingdom for hundreds of years. But a vicious heatwave engulfing Southeast Asia has resulted in smaller yields and spiralling costs, with growers and sellers increasingly panicked as global warming damages the industry. "This year is a crisis," durian farmer Busaba Nakpipat told AFP bluntly. The weather-beaten 54-year-old took... Читать дальше...

Tropical Cyclone Hidaya is projected to make landfall at the weekend on the Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts. Читать дальше...
