Empowering Black Women, Madam C.J. Walker's Story

Libertarianism.org

Millions of Americans were introduced to the life story of Madam C.J. Walker in the recently released Netflix miniseries Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. Although the dramatization took some liberties with the story, it ably captured Walker’s entrepreneurial spirit, which made her America’s first female, self-made millionaire. For libertarians, Walker’s story is a reminder of the immense possibilities offered to Americans by the free enterprise system. Her story is also a... Читать дальше...

Mrs. America

Libertarianism.org

Summary:

In Mrs. America, Cate Blanchett brilliantly plays conservative culture warrior Phyllis Schlafly, who built a coalition of housewives that ultimately kept the Equal Rights Amendment out of the US Constitution. In addition to Schlafly, the relationships between Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug and Jill Ruckelshaus are the focus of Hulu’s new mini-series. The show does not leave you sympathetic to Phyllis Schlafly, but it certainly opens your eyes to the impact of her success. Читать дальше...

The Secret History of Right-Wing Radio

Libertarianism.org

A generation before the rise of talk radio and hosts like Rush Limbaugh, there was another wave of right-wing radio. But the reason why few remember them is that they were the target of a hugely successful government censorship campaign implemented by President John F. Kennedy using IRS audits and the FCC’s “Fairness Doctrine.”

Libertarians Who Dismiss Social Justice Are Mistaken

Libertarianism.org

With the George Floyd killing and associated protests raising a number of issues involving race, the police, and state power that have long interested libertarians, the relationship between libertarian thought and calls for “social justice,” coming almost exclusively from the left, has found its way into the spotlight. Although some libertarians are comfortable with the term “social justice,” it’s probably fair to say that a clear majority is not, often citing Hayek’s criticism of the term or... Читать дальше...
