Beats tackles the low end with new $80 Solo Buds, Solo Beats 4 refresh

Macworld.com

Apple’s other company, Beats Electronics, is often overlooked in favor of the eponymous AirPods. But they shouldn’t be: Beats offers more colors, often better fit or different sizes/styles, and most of the same features you get with AirPods.

And today, the company has announced a long-overdue update to its most affordable headphones and a new pair of super-affordable earbuds.

Beats Solo 4

It’s been eight years since the Beats Solo 3 were released in 2016. Читать дальше...

Fortnite will return to the iPad in the EU, Epic Games vows

Macworld.com

Macworld

Fortnite’s lengthy exile from the iPhone and iPad looks set to end soon, at least in the EU. Having declared back in January its intention to bring the popular game back to iOS in 2024, Epic Games today boasted that it will also return to iPadOS this year.

Back in 2020, Epic tested the limits of Apple’s App Store policies by adding a direct payment option to the game. Apple, predictably, responded by removing Fortnite from its platforms (Google did the same) and deleting the company’s developer account. Читать дальше...

iOS 17.5 beta 4 arrives a week before the May iPad event

Macworld.com

Macworld

It’s been a month since the release of iOS 17.4, which introduced a few minor tweaks (like new emojis) for all users, but it has a massive change to app distribution for those in the European Union. In compliance with the Digital Markets Act, that version allowed alternate app stores, changed policies and terms around apps, browsers that use their own engines, and more.

Typically, a new iOS version is followed almost immediately by a beta of the next point release... Читать дальше...

Stop losing stuff with this 4-pack of AirTags for $20 off

Macworld.com

Macworld

AirTags are the rare Apple device that’s both cheap and designed to work with non-Apple devices. And today you can get set up for less: Amazon is selling a four-pack of AirTags for $80, a savings of $25 and $36 less than you’d pay separately.

AirTags are circular Bluetooth trackers that add Find My tracking to keys, bags, and other items that aren’t made by Apple. The small white-and-chrome discs connect to the app just like an iPhone or MacBook and alert you when... Читать дальше...

If your iPhone alarm stopped working in iOS 17.4.1, here’s a fix

Macworld.com

Macworld

People who rely on the iPhone’s alarm to wake up from sleeping may be in for a rude awakening. Or rather un-awakening. Social media is filled with reports claiming that the iPhone alarm isn’t working, causing users to oversleep and turn to TikTok to complain about the issue before eventually calling their employer to let them know they’ll be late.

According to The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern, Apple is aware of the problem and is working on a fix. She has not encountered the problem... Читать дальше...

It makes no sense to give the iPad Pro an M4 chip before the Mac

Macworld.com

Macworld

When you’re a kid, being an inventor sounds like an impossibly glamorous job–and a simple one, too. All you have to do is invent something brilliant (like, say, the iPad), then sit back and wait for the checks to roll in. But when you grow up you learn about capitalism and investors and stock prices and realize that everything is a lot more complicated. One-off brilliance is not enough—you need an ongoing revenue stream, and that means releasing new things on a regular basis, each preferably better than the last. Читать дальше...

The iPad Pro’s OLED display will be ‘by far the best’ of any tablet

Macworld.com

Macworld

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is already the best iPad you can buy, with an M2 processor, mini-LED display, and Face ID, but a new report claims the upcoming model will be even better—by far.

We already expect the new iPad Pro to get an OLED screen, which would be Apple’s first tablet with the high-end display tech. We already know the benefits—deeper blacks, better efficiency, and superior color handling—but a report from Ross Young at Display Supply Chain Consultants... Читать дальше...

Wait, is Apple actually doomed for real this time?

Macworld.com

Macworld

You might want to sit down for this.

… Apple saw its smartphone sales in China plummet by 19.1% year-over-year in [Q1 2024].

Counterpoint Technology Market Research (April 23, 2024)

That’s a lot of percents, but it is only China (lol, “only”). Surely the company is doing better elsewhere. What about the U.S.? The Macalope seems to remember it was doing gangbusters there.

Over the past four quarters, iPhone share of activations fell from 40 percent... Читать дальше...
