At least 40 villagers shot dead in latest violence in Nigeria's conflict-hit north

Nigerian authorities say Armed men attacked remote villages in northcentral Nigeria, killing at least a dozen villagers during a late-night raid. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack which follows a similar pattern to yearslong violence in the region blamed on the fight for control over water and land between nomadic herders and rural farmers. Vermont governor vetoes bill to restrict pesticide that is toxic to bees, saying it's anti-farmer

Vermont’s governor has vetoed a bill to severely restrict a type of pesticide that’s toxic to bees and other pollinators. Republican Gov. Phil Scott says the legislation “is more anti-farmer than it is pro-pollinator.” The bill would have banned uses of a type of neurotoxins know as neonics. It also would've badded selling or distributing soybean and cereal grain seeds that are coated in the substance. Biden releasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from Northeast reserve in bid to lower prices at pump

The Biden administration says it's releasing 1 million barrels of gasoline from a Northeast reserve established after Superstorm Sandy in a bid to lower prices at the pump this summer. The sale is from storage sites in New Jersey and Maine and will be allocated in increments of 100,000 barrels at a time. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm says the move is intended lower costs for American families and consumers in time for the summer driving season. Father says the 10-year-old child swept into a storm drain in Tennessee after severe storms has died

A 10-year-old Tennessee boy who was swept into a storm drain after severe weather two weeks ago has died. James Sullivan posted on social media on Monday that his son Asher's organs were donated to four other people “so he will live on in them.” Asher had been playing in the streets as the adults cleaned up storm debris on May 8 when he was somehow swept into the drain. Over 1 million claims related to toxic exposure granted under new veterans law, Biden announces

President Joe Biden, intent on selling his legislative accomplishments this election year, has gone to New Hampshire to detail the impact of a law that helps veterans get key benefits as a result of burn pit or other toxic exposure during their service. His administration said Tuesday more than 1 million claims have been granted to veterans since Biden signed the so-called PACT Act into law in August 2022. Judge hears wrongful conviction claim of Missouri inmate in prison for 33 years

Christopher Dunn has spent 33 years in prison serving life without parole for a murder in Missouri he has always claimed he didn’t commit. A hearing starting Tuesday will determine if he should go free. St. Louis prosecutors are now convinced that Dunn is telling the truth, but lawyers for the Missouri Attorney General’s Office want him kept behind bars. Dunn appeared in a gray suit at the hearing before Judge Jason Sengheiser. A recent Missouri law now allows prosecutors to request such hearings when they see evidence of a wrongful conviction.



Bad weather hampers search for 2 who went over waterfall in Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area

Authorities say bad weather is hampering the search for two men who went over a waterfall while fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northern Minnesota over the weekend. St. Louis County Sheriff’s Cmdr. Nate Skelton told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis on Tuesday that the cloud cover is too low for aerial surveillance and that up to 2 inches of rain is expected in the remote area. Politically motivated crime in Germany last year reached its highest level since the government started tracking it more than 20 years ago. The country’s top security official says the greatest threat comes from people with far-right motivations. The interior minister says that “we are a strong democracy, but our democracy is under pressure." Egyptian authorities say at least nine women and children have died after a small bus carrying about two dozen people slid off a ferry and plunged into the Nile River just outside Cairo.
