The stepped-up security around Trump is apparent, with agents walling him off from RNC crowds

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Former President Donald Trump was separated from supporters by his Secret Service detail as he walked onto the floor of the Republican National Convention Tuesday night. His ear still bandaged after an attempted assassination, Trump closely hugged the wall and instead of handshakes or hellos, offered fist pumps. The stepped-up security posture underscores the new reality facing Trump after a gunman opened fire at his rally in Pennsylvania Saturday, raising serious questions about the agency that is tasked with protecting the president... Judge's order dismissing Trump classified docs case won't be final word as long court fight awaits

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A judge’s stunning decision to dismiss the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump brought the prosecution to a halt. But it’s hardly the final word. A planned appeal by special counsel Jack Smith of U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s order is expected to tee up a court fight that might reach the U.S. Supreme Court and could result in the reinstatement of the indictment and even conceivably the reassignment of the case to a different judge. There’s no scenario in which a... Читать дальше...

What to watch as the Republican National Convention enters its third day in Milwaukee

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The third day of the Republican National Convention kicks off, with Republicans shifting the focus to issues of national security and foreign policy as the party seeks to draw a stark contrast from Democrats’ handling of the ongoing crises in Europe and the Middle East. This comes as Republicans spent Tuesday highlighting what they say is Democrats’ failure to secure the U.S. borders from illegal immigration. The topic Wednesday will expand to America’s standing on the world stage. Former Trump administration... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance will introduce himself to a national audience as he addresses the Republican National Convention. The Ohio senator’s headlining address on Wednesday will be his first speech as the Republican vice-presidential nominee. He's a relative political unknown who rapidly morphed in recent years from a severe critic to an aggressive defender of Trump. Vance is the first millennial to join a major-party ticket, and he joins the race as questions about the age of the men at the top of the tickets ... Читать дальше...

Unity at the RNC, knocks on Trump's prosecutions and Senate politics: Takeaways from day 2

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Republican National Convention marched into its second day Tuesday, showcasing classic GOP themes like border security and public safety that have become the centerpieces of former President Donald Trump’s campaign. With Trump’s primary rivals speaking, it was also an occasion for the GOP to demonstrate its unity, a sharp contrast to the Democratic party’s mounting concerns over the viability of President Joe Biden.

Nevada county reverses controversial vote and certifies two recounts while legal action looms

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Commissioners in Nevada’s second most populous county certified the results of two local recounts on Tuesday, reversing course on a controversial vote against certification that spurred legal action and put Washoe County in unchartered legal territory. The vote overturns last week’s rare move in the politically mixed swath of northern Nevada, including Reno, that had implications for the general election in one of the nation’s most important swing states. Still, Nevada’s secretary of state and attorney... Читать дальше...

Israel's military will begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men on Sunday. It could rattle the government

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Israeli military will begin sending draft notices to Jewish ultra-Orthodox men on Sunday. The step could destabilize Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Hundreds of men protested after the announcement. It follows a landmark Supreme Court order for young religious men to begin enlisting for military services. Under long-standing political arrangements, ultra-Orthodox men had been exempt from the draft, which is compulsory for most Jewish men. The system created widespread resentment among the general public in Israel... Читать дальше...

Appeals court voids Marine's adoption of Afghan orphan; child's fate remains in limbo

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A Virginia appellate court ruled Tuesday that a U.S. Marine should never have been granted an adoption of an Afghan war orphan and voided the custody order he’s relied on to raise the girl for nearly three years. The decision marked a major turning point in a bitter custody battle that has international ramifications far greater than the fate of one child. The appeals court decision dealt a significant blow in Marine Maj. Joshua Mast’s yearslong legal quest to keep the child, who was orphaned on the battlefield in Afghanistan in 2019.
