Two meteor showers will flash across the sky around the same time in late July

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

There will be back-to-back meteor showers in late July. The Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks early Tuesday. And this year, it will coincide with a second smaller meteor shower, the Alpha Capricornids. The Delta Aquariids occur every year in North America’s late summer. At the peak, 15 to 20 meteors are expected to be visible per hour in the Northern Hemisphere. Viewing should be even better in the Southern Hemisphere. A weaker meteor shower, Alpha Capricornids, should produce around five meteors per hour. Читать дальше...

Blood tests for Alzheimer's may be coming to your doctor's office. Here's what to know

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

New research suggests certain blood tests could help doctors diagnose Alzheimer's disease faster and more accurately. Confirming if someone's memory problems really are caused by Alzheimer's requires a brain scan or spinal tap to spot one culprit, sticky amyloid protein. Labs are offering tests to find clues in blood instead but they're not yet widely used because it's hard for doctors to tell which ones really work. A Swedish study found a certain test helped improve diagnosis without more costly follow-up procedures. Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Britain’s new left-leaning government says the nation is “broke and broken,” blaming the situation on its predecessors ahead of a major speech on the state of the public finances that is widely expected to lay the groundwork for higher taxes. In a sweeping assessment Sunday, three weeks after taking power, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office professed shock at the situation they inherited after 14 years of Conservative Party rule while releasing a department-by-department analysis of the perceived failures of the previous government.

A strike from Lebanon killed 12 youths. Could that spark war between Israel and Hezbollah?

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The Middle East is bracing for a potential flare-up in violence after Israeli authorities said a rocket from Lebanon struck a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. It killed 12 children and teens in what the Israeli military said was the deadliest attack on civilians since Oct. 7. The strike raised fears of a broader regional war between Israel and Hezbollah, which has denied a role in the attack. Saturday’s attack comes at a sensitive time, as Israel and Hamas are negotiating a cease-fire... Читать дальше...

Firefighters helped by cooler weather battle blaze that has scorched area larger than Los Angeles

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Thousands of firefighters battling a wildfire in northern California are getting some help from the weather just hours after the blaze exploded in size, scorching an area larger than Los Angeles. Officials said Saturday that cooler temperatures and an increase in humidity could help slow the Park Fire, the largest this year in California. Its intensity and dramatic spread led officials to make unwelcome comparisons to the monstrous Paradise fire in 2018, which killed 85 people and torched 11,000 homes. Читать дальше...

Beijing pressures lawmakers from 6 countries not to attend conference in Taiwan

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Chinese diplomats are pressuring lawmakers from at least six countries not to attend a China-focused summit in Taiwan in what they describe as efforts to isolate the self-governed island, participants told The Associated Press. Politicians in Bolivia, Colombia, Slovakia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and one other Asian country that declined to be named, say they are getting texts, calls and urgent requests for meetings that would conflict with their plans to travel to Taiwan. The summit... Читать дальше...

Maduro's last dance? Venezuela's ultimate political survivor faces toughest challenge yet

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Nicolás Maduro has survived an almost impossible litany of threats since becoming the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez's political heir in 2013. They range from a drone attack and mass protests to international criminal investigations for human rights abuses and drug trafficking. But Sunday’s election in which he is seeking a third term amid widespread economic deprivation has emerged as his toughest challenge yet. His upbringing in a working class barrio of Caracas and studies in communist... Читать дальше...

Ex-diplomat, political newcomer, grandpa. That's Edmundo González, Venezuela's Maduro rival

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

The past two months have been unlike anything Edmundo González Urrutia had ever experienced: He gave political speeches, shook people’s hands and waved from the top of a truck moving through cheering crowds gathered across Venezuela. He also shed the title of ambassador for that of candidate. The dramatic life changes for the 74-year-old González transformed him from a virtually unknown devout grandfather into a household name. Sunday he could make history if he defeats President Nicolas Maduro in a highly anticipated presidential election. Читать дальше...

Wisconsin Republicans ask voters to take away governor's power to spend federal money

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Wisconsin Republicans are asking voters to take away the governor’s power to unilaterally spend federal money, a reaction to the billions of dollars that flowed into the state during the COVID-19 pandemic. Democratic Gov. Tony Evers was free to spend that money as he pleased, angering Republicans who wanted the Legislature to have oversight. That's what would happen under a pair of related constitutional amendments up for voter approval in the Aug. 13 primary election. The changes would apply to... Читать дальше...

Even on quiet summer weekends, huge news stories spread to millions more swiftly than ever before

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Phones blow up with text messages. News alerts chirp. Stories are always at your fingertips in a wired world. President Joe Biden's announcement, coming without warning on a slow summer Sunday, illustrates how swiftly news spreads these days. Millions of people, no matter what they had been doing, knew within minutes. It's faster than in past generations, in large part because most people carry a phone with a powerful computer in their hands at all times. That's made journalists even more aware than... «SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Iowa is set to join more than a dozen other states where abortion access has been sharply curbed since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The law banning most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy takes effect in Iowa at 8 a.m. Monday. The state's abortion providers have been fighting but still preparing for the law, shoring up access in neighboring states and learning from others where bans went into effect more swiftly. A Planned Parenthood official in the region says clinics... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Los Angeles is the nation's epicenter of homelessness, where more than 45,000 people live in weather-beaten tent encampments and rusting RVs. But even in the state that is home to Silicon Valley, technology has not kept up with the long-running crisis. Billions of dollars have been spent to get homeless people off the streets, but outdated computer systems with error-filled data are all too often unable to provide even basic information. Better Angeles United is developing a series of apps that the... Читать дальше...
