India is looking to increase its purchases of crude oil and natural gas from the U.S. as it diversifies its energy supplies following criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump over its imports of discounted Russian oil. Officials did not respond directly to a comment by Trump saying that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him the country will stop buying Russian oil. India is the second biggest buyer of Russian oil after China. The foreign ministry said its priority is to safeguard consumer interests in a volatile energy environment. Expanding energy trade with the U.S. could help India mitigate potential supply disruptions.
