House Republicans are proposing sweeping changes to the nation’s voting laws. The package being released Thursday is a long-shot priority for President Donald Trump that would mean stricter requirements before Americans vote in the midterm elections in fall. The legislation reflects some of the party’s most sought-after election changes. They include requirements for photo IDs before people can vote, as well as proof of citizenship. It also would put prohibitions on universal vote-by-mail and ranked choice voting. The legislation faces a long haul in the narrowly split Congress where Democrats have warned similar proposals would disenfranchise voters.
