The capacity of trees to carry out photosynthesis is reduced when temperatures climb above 30°C, according to a study by the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL). In all species looked at for the study, researchers found that the uptake of CO2, by means of which the tree produces sugar from sunlight during photosynthesis, decreases at temperatures above 30°C, while water loss through transpiration continues to increase. Three of the fatalities over the long weekend were the result of avalanches, while one ski tourer fell to his death, authorities have reported. Two ski tourers were caught out and killed on Sunday by an avalanche on the Pigne d’Arolla mountain in canton Valais, at an altitude of almost 3,800 metres. A third member of the group survived the accident and alerted rescue services, according to Valais cantonal police. The two victims were found dead at the foot of the mountain’s north face. The right-wing Swiss People’s Party says it will launch two postulates calling for government clarifications about the protests and occupations in recent weeks. The first postulate calls for “an end to anti-Semitic ideas in public educational establishments in Switzerland”, the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper wrote at the weekend.
