ENGLAND’s Lionesses head to France looking for a first ever World Cup triumph.

Under Phil Neville, the side have developed into a free-flowing attacking unit – but will have to make do without Lyon midfielder Izzy Chistiansen at the finals.

Why is Izzy Christiansen not playing in the Women’s World Cup?

PHIL NEVILLE announced the 23-strong England squad for this summer’s tournament on May 8.

The announcement was made by a number of celebrities on official social channels, but there was no place for former Manchester City star Izzy Christiansen.

A leading light for European champions Lyon, Christiansen has been described by Neville as a ‘vital player’ in his plans.

But after suffering an ankle injury in the 3-0 win over Japan back in March, the midfielder was forced to undergo surgery.

She faced a huge battle to be fit in time for the tournament – and despite positive signs in recovery, hasn’t been deemed fit to play in the finals.

As a result, she’ll have to cheer on her team-mates from the stands in France.

What has Phil Neville said about the decision?

ENGLAND coach Neville is taking charge of his side at a major finals for the first time.

And naturally he is disappointed that Christiansen, so key to the way his team likes to play, won’t be heading to the tournament – but was quick to congratulate those who missed out on their efforts in getting the Lionesses to the World Cup.

He said: “This is a significant moment in our World Cup campaign and I want to congratulate all of the players in our squad.

“I must also thank those who just missed out for all of their efforts.

“We would not be in this position without them, they have played a big part in our World Cup journey and I know they will be our biggest supporters this summer.

“Picking a squad is never easy but I believe in this group and I know they will be ready to help us perform at our very best at the finals.

“We know what we are capable of achieving and are determined to do all we can to be successful. We keep saying it but the hard work starts now and we are going to give it everything we have to make the nation proud.”

Those who narrowly missed out on selection include Orlando Pride forward Chioma Ubogagu and Manchester City defender Gemma Bonner.
