TRENDY freakshakes can contain as much sugar as 16 doughnuts a Channel 4 investigation has revealed.
In Monday’s episode of Tricks of the Restaurant trade hosts Simon Rimmer and Sophie Morgan investigated the “Kim Kardashian of the dessert world” that has become hugely popular on social media.
The sweet treats are formed of a milkshake base and topped with various calorific toppings including everything from lollipops to entire slices of cake.
Worryingly, many of them are specifically targeted at children with names such as Unicorn, Cookie Monster and Funfair appealing to a younger audience.
However, as Sophie discovers, a single serving can contain up to 156g of sugar, that’s over five times more than the guideline daily amount for children of the age of 11.
The biggest offender was the Unicorn freakshake at the Toby Carvery, containing 39 teaspoons of sugar and 1,280 calories in one drink.
In sugar terms, that’s the equivalent of eating 16 Krispy Kreme glazed doughnuts which contain around 10g of sugar.
Nicole Rothband, specialist paediatric dietitian, warned of the huge health implications that consuming these could have.
Speaking to Simon she said: “It’s a lot of energy your body is going to have to use up otherwise it will get stored as fat.
“Over time that can lead to liver damange, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and kidney damage.”
It wasn’t just the Toby Carvery that was guilty of these sugar overloads with Frankie & Benny’s whose Salted Caramel Waffle shake was equally sinful.
Though they did not place any nutritional information on either the website or the menu the chain later revealed that there is 86.6g of sugar in one serving – the equivalent of almost nine doughnuts.

A spokesperson for the restaurant told Channel 4: “Our freakshakes are an… an occasional treat… we are reducing our range… to just one and… are working towards removing them completely by the end of the year.”
Toby Carvery has now removed all freakshakes from its menu.
