SCOTT Morrison will stay as Australia’s Prime Minister after the opposition Labour party conceded defeat in the country’s election.
Thanking those who backed him, Liberal Morrison said: “I said I was going to burn for you and I am, every single day.”
Pre-election polls hinted the coalition would lose its bid for a third three-year term and Morrison would have had one of the shortest terms as leader in the 118-year history of the Australian federation.
Opposition leader Bill Shorten called the PM to congratulate him on the win, he revealed late on Saturday night in Melbourne.
“I said that I was going to burn for you, and I am, every single day,” said a clearly jubilant Morrison.
“Tonight is not about me, it’s not even about the Liberal party. Tonight is about every single Australian who depends on their government to put them first.
“It has been those Australians who have worked hard every day, the have their dreams, they have their aspirations, to get a job, to get an apprenticeship, to start a business,to meet someone amazing…
“To start a family, to buy a home, to work hard and provide the best you can for your kids. To save for your retirement.
“These are the quiet Australians who have won a great victory tonight!”
Labor had offered a comprehensive package and solid commitments on healthcare, climate change and cutting tax benefits, he said.
“I say to all of you here tonight…. carry on the fight,” said an emotional Shortern as he announced his resignation..
“Labor’s next victory will belong to our next leader and I’m confident that victory will come at the next election.”
The Opposition Leader’s concession speech was made two days after Labor’s longest-serving prime minister Bob Hawke died, aged 89.
“I wish we could have done it for Bob but it was not to be,” he said to his supporters.
There was so much public confidence of a Labor victory the Australian online bookmaker Sportsbet paid out 1.3 million Australian dollars (£700,000) to bettors who backed the party two days before the election.
