Google is announcing a bunch of forthcoming updates to Assistant today, but one arrives right away: routines, a feature announced back in October that’ll allow Assistant to perform multiple actions at once from a single command you set up ahead of time. It’s a simple concept, but it should be a handy addition for people with lots of smart home gadgets.

Google Assistant is getting some important language upgrades this year. By the end of 2018, Google says it’ll be able to understand and speak 30 languages, enough to cover 95 percent of Android users. And sometime later this year, the Assistant won’t be limited to speaking one language at a time. It’ll automatically detect your language each time you speak and respond in kind. So if you’re multilingual, you’ll no longer have to pick only a single language to use with the Assistant.

The world’s biggest mobile technology event is upon us. This coming week’s Mobile World Congress is the alter ego of January’s Consumer Electronics Show. Where CES is full of far-out concepts, increasingly autonomous cars, and furnishings for the smart home, MWC is unapologetically fixated on mobile and phone tech. Hosted in Barcelona every year, MWC plays host to some of the biggest Android flagship launches, and this year’s no different with Samsung preparing to unveil its new Galaxy S9.

Samsung is replacing Opera Max with its own privacy and data savings app called Samsung Max. Samsung says the new Max has an “enhanced design and user experience” compared to Opera’s discontinued version, with two key Data Saving features that help users monitor data usage and manage privacy, while allowing users to access the internet securely.

Intel didn’t provide US government officials with details on the Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws until they leaked to the public last month. Reuters reports that US government officials have raised concerns that the flaws weren’t disclosed privately as they could have impacted national security. Intel didn’t report the flaws to US authorities because hackers hadn’t exploited the vulnerabilities yet. Instagram is dissolving its Global Community Team, which worked to build deep ties with photographers and promote the service around the world, The Verge has learned. As part of a reorganization at the company, about 12 jobs currently located in cities around the world will be eliminated, with affected employees being offered jobs elsewhere at Instagram or at its parent company, Facebook.

Shari Steele is resigning her position as the director of the Tor Project, according to a report by Cyberscoop. Steele will remain director through December 31st, and the search for her replacement is still underway.

Joss Whedon is leaving the solo Batgirl movie, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. In a statement given to the publication, Whedon explained, “Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story. I’m grateful to Geoff and Toby and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I…uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?’”

Election Assistance Commission chairman Matthew Masterson is being removed from his post by the White House and House Speaker Paul Ryan, according to a report from Reuters. Appointed to the commission in 2014 and serving as chairman since February, Masterson was expected to be appointed to a second four-year term.

I’ve never seen The Ring because I’m a huge baby, but I’ve now watched a terrifying augmented reality demo of its main villain Samara coming out of the TV screen, just like in the movie. A developer named Abhishek Singh, who has created lots of AR experiences, tweeted his idea of The Ring in AR.

HP’s first Windows 10 PC that’s powered by an ARM-based processor is now available for preorder for $999.99. It’s scheduled to ship by March 9th, and it’s one of the first “always connected PCs” that HP, Asus, and Lenovo have teamed up with Qualcomm to release over the next year or so.
