Spotify’s IPO was both a success and an uncertain forecast for the future of music

The Verge

Spotify’s initial public offering today was both a success and a tepid forecast for the future of music streaming. The company’s shares closed today at $149.60, up 12 percent from the initial reference price of $132, but down from a high of $165.90 when shares debuted on the New York Stock Exchange this morning. That gives the Swedish company a market valuation of around $26.6 billion. According to Reuters, Spotify shares slid from the opening high due to lackluster confidence in Spotify’s business model... Neo Cab is an emotional survival game about the last ride-share drivers

The Verge

In the quiet, dreamy world of the recently announced game Neo Cab, gig workers are a dying breed. Technology has evolved past the need for flesh-and-blood drivers behind the wheel. Those who remain offer a different kind of service: human contact. “[Riders] want to talk to another human being and connect with them and share their story,” says creative lead Patrick Ewing. “There’s that taxi cab confessions angle that fascinated me — like anybody could get in this car.”

Facebook launches bulk app removal tool to clean up your privacy settings

The Verge

Facebook now lets you bulk remove third-party apps, and any and all posts those apps may have published on your behalf, a welcome privacy change that should make it easier to strip access to your profile from services you no longer use. The change, precipitated by the ongoing Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal, is part of a series of sudden changes Facebook is making to mitigate fallout from the revelation that third-party developers have had generous access to users’ data and could use... The Verge

When Carrie Wade first heard the news that Apple was proposing emoji to represent people with disabilities, she felt happy — then immediately curious about what sorts of emoji Apple had come up with. Wade has cerebral palsy and works at the American Association of People with Disabilities. To finally have emoji made specifically for people like her felt like an important step forward.

How to change your DNS to see if Cloudflare can speed up your internet

The Verge

A couple days ago, Cloudflare launched its own DNS service at 1.1.1.1, promising that consumers would enjoy greater privacy and potentially faster internet if they switched over from their ISP’s default. Now, those speed differences might not be significant or noticeable enough to the point of making the switch full-time. (We’re talking milliseconds here.) But it doesn’t take many steps to test out a new DNS, so it’s probably worth a quick try if you’re curious or sold on Cloudflare’s privacy measures. Читать дальше...

Like many young Koreans living through Korea’s difficult economy, she came to see her investment as “the only way out.”

Neil Gaiman’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties looks thoroughly bonkers

The Verge

“They’re just girls,” said Vic. “They don’t come from another planet.” That’s the key line of Neil Gaiman’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties, a short story nominated for a Hugo in 2007 and available in full to read on his website. The story follows two 15-year-old boys who inadvertently crash the wrong party in 1970s South London and meet a group of women who aren’t exactly human. It seems grounded at first, but it rapidly takes off into Gaiman’s familiar mix of poetry and otherworldly fantasy. Читать дальше...

Heaven’s Vault is a game about translating an ancient alien language

The Verge

Initially, the premise for Heaven’s Vault sounds like a typical video game. You play as a young woman named Aliya Elasra, accompanied by her temperamental robot Six, and together you explore a series of moons that were once home to a mysterious ancient civilization. But the ruins aren’t filled with violent aliens to kill or powerful weapons to discover. Instead, what the civilization left behind is words, and it’s your job to figure out what they mean.

Apple Music had a better Weeknd than Spotify

The Weeknd’s latest project, My Dear Melancholy, pulled in over 26 million streams in its first 24 hours on Apple Music, with the lead song “Call Out My Name” pulling in 6 million of those streams, the company tells The Verge. That in itself isn’t a record, but Apple Music’s numbers did beat out the single’s performance on Spotify, which pulled in nearly 3.5 million streams in the same period — the largest debut of 2018 on the service — according to Republic Records.
