LG’s V30S ThinQ will cost $930 in the US

The Verge

LG announced a storage and memory update to its V30 phone earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, and only now are we getting an idea of what the device might cost in the US. B&H has listed the 128GB version of the V30S ThinQ for $929.99. We don’t yet have pricing for the 256GB version. We’ve reached out to LG for confirmation, but the company did confirm the price with CNET. The original V30 Plus with 128GB of storage cost $912 in the US.

Microsoft still won’t say how many Xbox Ones have been sold

The Verge

Microsoft is providing a vague update on its Xbox One sales today, after remaining largely silent for years on exactly how many consoles have been sold. “Xbox One sales are up 15 percent over the same period last year,” says Microsoft’s game marketing chief, Mike Nichols, in a blog post about “recording-setting” Xbox numbers. The blog post still doesn’t include any actual sales numbers, so it’s hard to tell exactly how well the Xbox One is doing. Either way, it’s encouraging for Microsoft that... Читать дальше...

Google is secretly building a social-gaming startup called Arcade

The Verge

Google is reportedly helping young tech entrepreneur Michael Sayman build and launch a social gaming startup. Bloomberg reports that the project — called Arcade — won’t be tied to any existing social networks; instead, users will create accounts based off their phone number. The games might involve some trivia elements. Google confirmed Arcade’s existence to Bloomberg but provided no details other than the project being “focused on mobile gaming with friends.”

Telegram cancels its much-hyped initial coin offering

The Verge

Secure messaging service Telegram is canceling its initial coin offering (ICO), an anonymous source told The Wall Street Journal today, and it won’t be opening up its digital coins for public sale. The cancellation is a blow to public investors who hoped to get in on the ground floor of one of the largest cryptocurrency investment opportunities in history, with an estimated $1.7 billion already raised.

Facebook is using billions of Instagram images to train artificial intelligence algorithms

The Verge

Your Instagram photo of a perfectly composed plate of pancakes or an exquisitely framed sunset is helping Facebook train its artificial intelligence algorithms to better understand objects in images, the company announced today at its annual F8 developer conference. Facebook says the approach, which culls images from publicly available hashtags, is a way to amass and train software with billions of images without the need for human workers to laboriously analyze the data and annotate it. The end... Читать дальше...

The best gadgets are the ones you know how to use

The Verge

Sometimes you can’t help what movies stick with you. You end up quoting them to people who are baffled that you think they might possibly share your cultural references. I’m ashamed to say one of those movies, for me, is 1996’s The Ghost and the Darkness. It’s a film so deeply naive in its attempts to address colonialism, Orientalism, and racism that I can’t recommend it to anybody.

MoviePass is bringing back its unlimited plan

The Verge

After doing away with its unlimited model just two weeks ago in favor of a limited four-movie-per-month plan for new users, MoviePass has flip-flopped back to its old one-movie-per-day plan. And CEO Mitch Lowe now says the subscription service is “absolutely committed” to keeping it that way, Wired reports.

Stan Lee cameos have become the MCU’s one surefire applause cue

The Verge

The average Marvel movie has at least four clap-worthy moments: the first time a hero suits up, the best one-liner, when good triumphs over evil, and when Stan Lee shows up. But in my experience — which includes a 31-hour Infinity War marathon — only one of these moments is guaranteed to get a reaction every time. From the dull, dour The Incredible Hulk to the carefree world of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Stan Lee’s cameos killed every time.

LG’s G7 isn’t even trying to compete with the best phones

The Verge

Every year since the vastly underrated LG G2 in 2013, I’ve been going through the same emotional cycle with LG flagship phones: anticipation in the buildup, excitement during the launch, and ultimate disappointment with the final product. This was the case with the LG G3, G4, G5, and G6 — but not the latest G7 ThinQ. After my first encounter with the LG G7, I’m already over it. This is the least inspiring, least daring G-series phone that LG has released in a long time, maybe ever.

The 12 gripping science fiction and fantasy novels you need to check out this May

The Verge

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Slate’s podcast Slow Burn, an engrossing dive into the Watergate scandal that eventually prompted President Richard Nixon to resign. The series prompted me to pick up a book that has been on my to-read list for nearly four years: Crooked, by Austin Grossman. It’s a book that depicts Nixon’s many flaws against the backdrop of Lovecraftian horror.
