Apple resumes iPhone X production in face of weak XS sales, report claims

Apple has resumed production of the iPhone X due to weaker than expected demand for its latest XS and XS Max models, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The move is allegedly due to an agreement made with Samsung to purchase a certain quantity of OLED screens. With this year’s OLED-equipped models failing to sell in the quantities needed to fulfill the terms of the deal, the report suggests that Apple is turning to last year’s model for a solution. MIT researchers create plane that flies without any moving parts

Researchers at MIT have developed a plane capable of flying without any moving parts, reports MIT Technology Review. The feat was achieved using electroaerodynamic propulsion, which uses a pair of electrodes to push around ions and create ionic wind. The phenomenon has been known about since the 1960s (in fact, Apple even considered using it to cool its laptops back in 2012), but this is the first time it’s been used to propel a plane.

Google Duplex expands to ‘small group’ of Pixel owners

Google Duplex, the automated service that calls up businesses to make bookings on your behalf, has received a limited public launch, reports VentureBeat. In a statement, Google said that it’s starting its “slow rollout” of the service, which is now available to a “small group” of Google Pixel phone owners in “select cities.” As well as expanding its availability with users, the service can also call restaurants that Google hasn’t explicitly partnered with.

Amazon reverses decision to block international sites in Australia

Amazon is no longer going to block users in Australia from accessing Amazon.com or other international versions of the site. In July, Amazon started redirecting Australian users to Amazon.com.au and stopped shipping to Australian addresses following new goods and service tax (GST) legislation that requires retailers to collect 10 percent tax on imports.

A WeChat-powered hotel in China lets you check in, enter your room, and get breakfast through your phone

China’s biggest app, WeChat, partnered with InterContinental to open a smart hotel in Shanghai that lets users book rooms, remotely check in, and use their phones as key cards — all without requiring human assistance. Once they’ve completed their reservation, travelers verify their identity at the hotel through facial recognition and collect their digital key card.
