A Georgia judge has approved a referendum sought by slave descendants to challenge rezoning changes that residents say threaten one of the South's last Gullah-Geechee communities. McIntosh County Probate Court Judge Harold Webster on Tuesday ordered that a special election be held Oct. 1. He said election officials verified that more than 20% of county voters signed a referendum petition. King Charles III plans to resolve this quandary by converting two state Bentleys to run on biofuel. Buckingham Palace said Wednesday that this will give the monarch time to go electric, as it released the royal accounts for the financial year ended March 31. The king also installed solar panels at Windsor Castle and increased the use of sustainable aviation fuel for royal flights.

US Army worker who stole nearly $109 million to buy mansions and luxury cars is sentenced

A Texas woman who pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $109 million from a youth development program for military families has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. Janet Yamanaka Mello, a former civilian employee of the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio was sentenced Tuesday in federal court after pleading guilty in March. Rushed railcar inspections and 'stagnated' safety record reinforce concerns after fiery Ohio crash

Rail unions say that inspections continue to be rushed and a new federal study reinforces that concern with railroads routinely allowing less than two minutes per car for inspections. There are nearly 200 things to check on every railcar and the Transportation Communications Union that represents workers say there's no way to do that in the time allotted.
