■ Lake Erie: Smallmouth bass fishing is heating up around the Bass Islands, according to the folks at Netcraft. They report that anglers are enticing strikes with tube skirts or drop-shot rigs. On the walleye front, the reefs around the Camp Perry firing range were productive earlier in the week for anglers using hair jigs in ½ and ¾ ounce sizes. Expect the fishing to really pick up once the water clarity improves and the big breezes take a break. In the Michigan waters, anglers trolling crank baits or drift-fishing crawler harnesses have picked up walleye in 12 to 20 feet of water off Stony Point.
