Bears Ownership “Soured” on Mitch Trubisky, Want Competition in 2020
Chicago Bears fans were shocked when GM Ryan Pace stated without pause that the plan was for Mitch Trubisky to remain the starting quarterback in 2020. His belief, which was apparently shared by head coach Matt Nagy, was that the 25-year old man strides in certain important areas of his game despite the disappointing production. They indicated that improvements in areas like his footwork, not to mention the rest of the offense in general would bring about better results next season.
However, things got a bid weird when team chairman George McCaskey took his turn to speak with the media. He was presented with not one but two separate opportunities to throw his full support behind Trubisky. Both times he carefully sidestepped the questions. First he stated everyone should be happy he doesn’t make those decisions and he trusts in both Pace and Nagy. The second time he uttered just a few words on Trubisky before suddenly shifting gears to talk about the defense.
It turns out this might not have been an accident.
Jeff Hughes of Da Bears Blog has ties with sources close to the organization. In a recent article, he wrote something quite interesting regarding the status of the Bears’ young quarterback behind closed doors.
“Pace is not going to let Trubisky go unchallenged into 2020 and risk his entire tenure on one of the game’s worst quarterbacks. Pace is beloved by ownership. They want desperately for him to be at the helm of football operations for years to come. But they will not patiently allow Trubisky to destroy what they believed was built in 2018.
Because for all the “he’s a good kid, he works hard” stuff that has surfaced about Trubisky, there has been a general souring on him inside the building.”
Timing of this Mitch Trubisky revelation makes sense
This revelation instantly makes the McCaskey responses far more understandable. He sounded like an owner that absolutely did not want to get caught in any way endorsing a player he didn’t 100% believe in. However, he did throw his support behind Pace. So it’s true that the Bears are willing to continue trusting the GM to find a way out of this predicament. This will involve some expected tweaks to the quarterback position. Most likely in the form of competition.
As to who that could end up being? Nobody can say for sure except that it will probably come in the form of a veteran free agent. The draft is unlikely given no quarterback in this upcoming class will likely be any better than Trubisky is. So adding someone with experience makes more sense. It could come down to whether or not Pace can get them at a favorable price. Names like Case Keenum and Philip Rivers could be ones to watch.
