Fundora smashes Ahmed in two rounds, wins WBA eliminator

The 154-pound giant dominated another opponent, stopping Habib Ahmed in two.

Unique junior middleweight Sebastian Fundora stayed unbeaten with a one-sided beatdown of Habib Ahmed tonight on the Spence-Garcia card, stopping his short notice opponent in the second round of a WBA 154-pound eliminator.

The 6’5” (or 6’6” or 6’7”, depending on the day you ask) Fundora goes to 16-0-1 (11 KO) with the quick night of work, and in some ways does present as a huge problem for anyone at 154, given his absurd dimensions and fighting style, where he throws his hands, stays active, and does sit down with some power, it’s not all slapping style punches, which you sometimes see from guys who are wildly tall for a weight class under cruiserweight.

But he’s also still young in his career, still hasn’t faced a serious contender yet, and there are still steps to climb up the ladder before he’s in with one of PBC’s established names at junior middleweight, at least another fight or two. But the WBA eliminator puts him in line for a shot at either Jermell Charlo, who holds the “super world” title, or Erislandy Lara, who holds the “regular” title. Both would be big, big steps up right now for the 22-year-old “Towering Inferno.”

Ghana’s Ahmed, 30, falls to 27-2-1 (18 KO) in defeat, his second one-sided loss in the United States. He was also soundly beaten and stopped by Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in a 2018 fight for a 168-pound title.
