If there is one area of the roster that the Chicago Bears can claim legitimate strength, it is their secondary. Jaylon Johnson, Kyler Gordon, Tyrique Stevenson, Kevin Byard, and Jaquan Brisker make up a formidable starting lineup. Meanwhile, Josh Blackwell, Jaylon Jones, and Elijah Hicks all appear to be strong backups. It seems almost impossible for anybody to make a legitimate push to crack the roster in that area. Yet that hasn’t stopped at least one name from trying. He comes with big game experience, too.
Tarvarius Moore was a 3rd round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2018. He spent four seasons there, helping the team reach the Super Bowl in 2019. He even intercepted Patrick Mahomes in that game. In total, he has played 67 games with 13 starts. The Green Bay Packers signed him last year as a free agent, but he landed on injured reserve, missing the season. Last Thursday night in the Hall of Fame game reminded people he can still play. Moore had four tackles, two stops for no gain, and allowed only two catches for eight yards when targeted.
Moore is the kind of player the Chicago Bears like.
He is big, fast, and physical. Moore posted a 4.32 in the 40-yard dash at 6’1, 200 lbs. The big challenge for him was coming from a smaller school (Southern Miss). It would be an adjustment for him in the NFL. Things were trending up by 2020 when he started eight games. Sadly, he ruptured his Achilles during practice in the summer of 2021. By the time he returned, his job belonged to Talanoa Hufanga. The 27-year-old appears healthy and motivated to remind people he can still play.
Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is no stranger to reclamation projects. After flaming out in Minnesota, Xavier Rhodes had one of his best seasons with him. Pierre Desir and Eddie Jackson can say the same. If Moore has something to offer, this might be the perfect situation to find out. His ability as a run defender alone would be useful. If he can show a little special teams value, a roster spot should be waiting at the end of the month.
