Coaching Candidates Are Wary Of Chicago Bears Job For Unexpected Reason
The Chicago Bears believe their job will be the most attractive on the upcoming carousel. Team president Kevin Warren said as much during his recent press conference—some struggle to believe that, noting the organization’s ongoing dysfunction for the past decade. Still, the sales pitch seems strong. Caleb Williams looks exactly like a future star quarterback after going #1 overall. The roster is well-stocked, with talent on both sides of the ball. Things are set up for this team to compete if they get the right coach.
However, one unexpected wrinkle could complicate matters for the Bears. No, it isn’t the awkward way they fired Eberflus right after a press conference where he said he planned to be ready for San Francisco. It is something much simpler than that, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. Candidates are wary of coming to the NFC North.
“A far as jobs that could be more attractive than what the Bears offer, perhaps Jacksonville is the answer. Should the Jaguars’ head-coaching and general manager jobs open at season’s end, that could be a better place to go, thanks to a weaker division, a long-term quarterback in place and the chance to build something from the ground up.”
The Chicago Bears present a difficult path to a championship.
Getting to the playoffs is hard enough in normal circumstances. Having to battle through the deepest division in football makes it that much worse. Detroit, Green Bay, and Minnesota all have nine wins this season already. Each has a relatively young, proven head coach and a quarterback they feel they will compete with for years to come. The Chicago Bears feel they have their quarterback, but it will take a coach with monumental resilience, resourcefulness, and competitiveness to take on a challenge like this. It isn’t something you can blame the organization for. They didn’t intentionally make this division a gauntlet. Things just worked out that way.
If anything, it might be a blessing in disguise. Coaches who shy away from the job for this reason will show the Bears they lack the backbone to take on the NFL’s best. Better to find someone who embraces the challenge. To be the man, you have to beat the man.
