Marcedes Lewis Is Fed Up With The Caleb Williams Slander
Caleb Williams was the #1 pick in the 2024 draft for a reason. He won a Heisman trophy and carried an otherwise mediocre USC program to considerable success. His talent was off the charts. Then you look at his production as a rookie last season, and one would think people would be impressed. He finished with over 4,000 total yards, 20 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. It was by far the best rookie season a Chicago Bears quarterback has ever had, and he did it while seeing his head coach and offensive coordinator get fired. Yet people act like he was the primary reason the Bears were terrible. Marcedes Lewis is tired of it.
The ageless tight end spent the 2024 season in Chicago, his second with the team. While it didn’t go the way he’d hoped, he was in the locker room and on the field with Williams throughout the journey. He appeared on The Herd with Colin Cowherd, where he was asked about the quarterback’s frustrating tendency not to take more layup passes last season. Lewis leaped to Williams’ defense, stating the rookie did everything asked of him and more to keep the season afloat.
Marcedes Lewis seems eager to see what Williams does next.
The 40-year-old fully intends to keep playing, hoping to push his career to the ultra-rare feat of 20 NFL seasons. Very few have ever even come close to that goal. One would think he has no interest in returning to Chicago after what happened. However, it appears Marcedes Lewis can see something building in Halas Hall. The presence of Williams alone makes it preferable. Yet it’s the arrival of Ben Johnson, with all of his credibility as an offensive mastermind, that is an even bigger draw. That pairing of head coach and quarterback has a chance to do great things. The last time Lewis tasted something like it was with Aaron Rodgers and Matt Lafleur in Green Bay. It would be fun to get him back for one more year.
