China Must Pay for Its Brutal Human Rights Record

The National Interest

Michael Mazza

Security, Asia

The United States cannot participate in the 2022 Olympics without signaling acquiescence to China’s most flagrant human-rights abuses.

Thirty years ago, the People’s Liberation Army marched on Beijing. Troops fired indiscriminately on unarmed civilians. Tanks crushed the innocent underfoot. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people were murdered, while many others were thrown in prison for years or decades; some received lifetime sentences. Some protesters... Читать дальше...

NBA Finals ratings down nearly 25 percent

Adage.com

As expected, the absence of superstar ratings magnet LeBron James and the virtual elimination of an entire U.S. media market has put a damper on the TV turnout for the NBA Finals. But take a step back from all the performative rending of garments and gnashing of teeth and the deliveries for the Golden State-Toronto series don’t exactly represent a catastrophic failure for advertisers or for the league itself.

Astronomers captured an image of a double asteroid as it sped past Earth

BGR.com

Astronomers eager to observe bizarre visitors to our neck of the Solar System were in for a real treat late last month as the rare double asteroid 1999 KW4 made a "close" pass of Earth at a distance of some 3.2 million miles. It was far enough away that the space rock didn't have a chance of posing a threat to our planet, but it was close enough that scientists were able to catch a glimpse of the special visitor. Asteroid 1999 KW4 isn't like many of the other space rocks that speed past our planet on their way around the Sun. Читать дальше...

Why the MMIWG Inquiry uses the word genocide

CBC

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he accepts the recommendations of the Inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women. And that includes the finding that actions have amounted to a genocide. Now, some who've studied genocide up close are concerned about the use of the term in the report. So what's the justification for the Inquiry's use of genocide? For that, the CBC's Andrew Nichols spoke with Fannie Lafontaine. She was the lead author on the Inquiry's 43-page legal analysis, and is the... Читать дальше...

Business Standard

Train passengers were stuck for six hours in a tunnel outside Paris on Tuesday after their high-speed service suffered a power cut just minutes after departure, leaving them in sweltering heat, without electricity or working toilets. The train bound for Barcelona became trapped in the tunnel in the Yerres area outside Paris. French rail operator SNCF said the power failure lasted only 10 or 15 minutes but the train was unable to restart because of its position.
