Birmingham — It was all about instinct for Maddie Hinch. The homework had been done, that much was clear by the way she guarded, stood and moved with each Kiwi shoot-out attempt. Yet, New Zealand have been off the scene and the note-taking was limit. This was her moment to stand tall and thrive.

England beat New Zealand on penalties to stay on course for a first women’s hockey Commonwealth Games gold medal. Isabelle Petter and Hannah Martin scored in the shootout as the goalkeeper Maddie Hinch refused to be beaten with a series of brilliant saves and afterwards professed to “love penalties”.

England won a dramatic penalty shootout to advance to the final of the Commonwealth Games following a tense stalemate with New Zealand.

A tough result for Wales as they lose 0-1 to South Africa in their Commonwealth Games 7th/8th classification match.

South Africa scored the only goal of the game as they confirmed a 7th place finish at the Commonwealth Games. Lilian du Plessis finishing off a wonderful team move was the difference between the teams.

Kenya national women’s hockey team has finished ninth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Kenya’s women register first ever Commonwealth Games win

The morning session began with a little bit of history as Kenya’s women secured their first ever Commonwealth games victory. This was followed by South Africa pipping Wales to 7th place in a tight encounter. The evening session started with England booking their spot in Sunday’s gold medal match with a shoot-out win over New Zealand. The second semi-final also went all the way, as Australia came out on top.
