When electrons slowly vanish during cooling

Sciencedaily.com

Many substances change their properties when they are cooled below a certain critical temperature. Such a phase transition occurs, for example, when water freezes. However, in certain metals there are phase transitions that do not exist in the macrocosm. They arise because of the special laws of quantum mechanics that apply in the realm of nature's smallest building blocks. It is thought that the concept of electrons as carriers of quantized electric charge no longer applies near these exotic phase transitions. Читать дальше...

Immune cell discovery could lead to improved chronic worm treatment

Sciencedaily.com

Researchers have uncovered why some intestinal worm infections become chronic in animal models, which could eventually lead to human vaccines and improved treatments. Parasitic worms, also called helminths, usually infect the host by living in the gut. About a quarter of the world population is afflicted with helminth infections.

Half the population to have a mental health disorder by 75

Sciencedaily.com

Scientists analyzed data from more than 150,000 adults across 29 countries between 2001 and 2022 with results demonstrating the high prevalence of mental health disorders, with 50 per cent of the population developing at least one disorder by the age of 75.

Here's how hot and extreme the summer has been, and it's only halfway over

Times Union

At about its halfway point, the record-breaking hot and extreme summer of 2023 is both unprecedented and unsurprising. Killer heat. Deadly floods. Smoke from wildfires that chokes. Scientists say they've been talking about this for a long time but the really hot seawater worries them. And there’s no relief in sight. Forecasters predict a hotter than normal August and September. Records are being demolished. People are dying. Scientists say it's mostly climate change with a bit of El Nino. After a... Читать дальше...

New method improves proton acceleration with high power laser

Sciencedaily.com

Bringing protons up to speed with strong laser pulses -- this still young concept promises many advantages over conventional accelerators. For instance, it seems possible to build much more compact facilities. Prototypes to date, however, in which laser pulses are fired at ultra-thin metal foils, show weaknesses -- especially in the frequency with which they can accelerate protons. An international working group has tested a new technique: In this approach, frozen hydrogen acts as a 'target' for the laser pulses.

The Fire TV Stick 4K Max is on sale once again for its all-time low price of $24.99 ($30 off) at Best Buy and Target. It’s one of the best streaming devices you can buy, especially if you prefer one that can neatly hide behind your TV and has excellent support for voice controls. Its Fire TV operating system highlights Prime Video content a lot, and it does have some ads, but its speedy performance and Wi-Fi 6 speeds at this low price are a worthwhile tradeoff. Researchers identify 'clear changes' in aging brain using novel techniques

Sciencedaily.com

Researchers investigating brain activity in older people say the coordination between neuronal activity and the brain's oxygenation is altered. Non-invasive recording of the function of these neurovascular units in living humans has never been done before, but has now been achieved by using several measurement techniques coupled with novel analysis methods. The results promise a relatively simple and non-invasive method for assessing the state of the brain in healthy aging, and in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

Way cool: 'freeze ray' technology

An unusual discovery is now being developed as an on-demand cooling solution for high-flying military electronics.

Rio Pará contributes high trace metal concentrations to the Amazon estuary

Sciencedaily.com

Rivers carry vital nutrients and trace metals into the ocean. These elements carry characteristic isotopic signatures that geologists can use to identify where the water in the ocean comes from. As part of the international project, which aims to map trace metals in the global ocean using such signatures, researchers studied the waters of the Amazon estuary. In doing so, they have discovered that the hitherto ignored Pará river system has a major influence on the composition of the water masses there.
