Wind turbines as new smokestacks: Preserving ruralness and restrictive land-use ordinances across U.S. counties

Plos.org

by Inhwan Ko, Nives Dolšak, Aseem Prakash

Renewable energy (RE) facilities provide a global public good of climate mitigation but impose local costs such as landscape disruption and harming the rural character. Because of their land-intensive nature, utility-scale RE facilities tend to be located in rural areas with plentiful and cheap land. In the U.S., about every fourth county (729 of 3,143) has enacted ordinances restricting the siting of RE facilities. Drawing on a novel dataset of county-level... Читать дальше...

Does the 11-year solar cycle affect lake and river ice phenology?

Plos.org

by Daniel F. Schmidt, Kevin M. Grise, Michael L. Pace

Records of ice-on and ice-off dates are available for lakes and rivers across the Northern Hemisphere spanning decades and in some cases centuries. This data provides an opportunity to investigate the climatic processes that may control ice phenology. Previous studies have reported a trend toward shorter ice-covered seasons with global warming, as well as links between ice phenology and several modes of natural climate variability such as the North Atlantic Oscillation... The Jena Eyewitness Research Stimuli (JERS): A database of mock theft videos involving two perpetrators, presented in 2D and VR formats with corresponding 2D and 3D lineup images

Plos.org

by Ulrike Kruse, Stefan R. Schweinberger

Empirical investigations into eyewitness identification accuracy typically necessitate the creation of novel stimulus materials, which can be a challenging and time-consuming task. To facilitate this process and promote further research in this domain, we introduce the new Jena Eyewitness Research Stimuli (JERS). They comprise six video sequences depicting a mock theft committed by two different perpetrators, available in both two-dimensional (2D) and 360° format... Читать дальше...

Carbon opportunity cost increases carbon footprint advantage of grain-finished beef

Plos.org

by Daniel Blaustein-Rejto, Nicole Soltis, Linus Blomqvist

Beef production accounts for the largest share of global livestock greenhouse gas emissions and is an important target for climate mitigation efforts. Most life-cycle assessments comparing the carbon footprint of beef production systems have been limited to production emissions. None also consider potential carbon sequestration due to grazing and alternate uses of land used for production. We assess the carbon footprint of 100 beef production systems in 16 countries... Don’t worry, be happy: Habitat selection of Blanding’s Turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) living in a reference condition in Georgian Bay

Plos.org

by Reta Lingrui Meng, Patricia Chow-Fraser

Few areas within the Great Lakes basin are currently free from impact of human activities, and it is important to study these reference conditions for comparison with degraded sites in those regions. Here, we use radio telemetry to investigate habitat use, movement, and habitat selection of a population of the endangered (Federally in Canada) Blanding’s turtle (Emydoidea blandingii, BLTU) inhabiting a mostly undisturbed archipelago located at the northern shore of Mnidoo gamii (Georgian Bay)... Investigating the use and awareness of artificial sweeteners among diabetic patients in Bangladesh

Plos.org

by Aparna Shil, Jufen Zhang, Havovi Chichger

Background

As with many countries around the world, the incidence of diabetes in Bangladesh is increasing significantly. Whilst there is controversy in the field regarding the health impact of artificial sweeteners in Western communities, the link between sweetener consumption and awareness in Bangladesh has not been established.

Methods

In the present study, 260 diabetic patients completed a questionnaire survey to investigate the use... Читать дальше...

Caries prevalence and other dental pathological conditions in Vikings from Varnhem, Sweden

Plos.org

by Carolina Bertilsson, Maria Vretemark, Henrik Lund, Peter Lingström

In a late Swedish Viking Age population dating from around 10th-12th century AD, the prevalence, distribution and location of dental caries were studied. Tooth wear, other dental pathology and anatomical variations were identified and recorded clinically and radiographically. A total of 3293 teeth were analyzed from 171 individuals with complete and partial dentitions, of which 133 were permanent and 38 deciduous/mixed dentition. Читать дальше...

Self-discrepancies in mind perception for actual, ideal, and ought selves and partners

Plos.org

by Oliver L. Jacobs, Farid Pazhoohi, Alan Kingstone

Defining and measuring self-discrepancies in mind perception between how an individual sees their actual self in comparison to their ideal or ought self has a long but challenging history in psychology. Here we present a new approach for measuring and operationalizing discrepancies of mind by employing the mind perception framework that has been applied successfully to a variety of other psychological constructs. Across two studies (N = 265... Читать дальше...

Data mining and spatio-temporal characteristics of urban road traffic emissions: A case study in Shijiazhuang, China

Plos.org

by Lili Ren, Xuliang Guo, Jiangling Wu, Amit Kumar Singh

Accurate estimation of traffic emissions and analysis of spatio-temporal distribution on urban roads play a crucial role in the development of low-carbon transportation system. Traditionally, a region’s emission characteristics have been studied using numerous emission models with GPS-based spatio-temporal data. Due to the heavy data processing needs of GPS-based data, emission characteristics for a large region have been studied by... Читать дальше...

Artificial physics engine for real-time inverse dynamics of arm and hand movement

Plos.org

by Mykhailo Manukian, Serhii Bahdasariants, Sergiy Yakovenko

Simulating human body dynamics requires detailed and accurate mathematical models. When solved inversely, these models provide a comprehensive description of force generation that considers subject morphology and can be applied to control real-time assistive technology, for example, orthosis or muscle/nerve stimulation. Yet, model complexity hinders the speed of its computations and may require approximations as a mitigation strategy. Читать дальше...

The role of innovation and entrepreneurship in promoting common prosperity in China: Empirical evidence from a two-way fixed effects model

Plos.org

by Tingting Zhang, Wenxuan Wang, Chunyu Li, Xiaofan Wang

Common prosperity stands as a pivotal concept and objective within China’s socialism with distinctive characteristics, serving as a fundamental assurance and basis for ensuring its people’s happiness and comprehensive development. This research employs a Coupled Coordination Degree Model to construct a common prosperity Index using data from China between 2010 and 2020. The study investigates the influence of innovation and entrepreneurship... Читать дальше...
