A study of the impact of de-capacity policies on industry capacity utilization paths: Evidence from the Chinese steel industry

Plos.org

by Shixin Shi, Hao Li, Hongsong Tang, Yang Liu

The issue of overcapacity has become an unavoidable challenge in the rapid development of nations, constraining economic progress, particularly within industries like steel, coal, and cement. This study, using the example of the Chinese steel industry in the context of supply-side structural reform, employs data envelopment analysis (DEA) models to measure capacity utilization, and ordinary least squares (OLS) models to investigate the impact... A non-canonical Puf3p-binding sequence regulates CAT5/COQ7 mRNA under both fermentable and respiratory conditions in budding yeast

Plos.org

by Sachiko Hayashi, Kazumi Iwamoto, Tohru Yoshihisa

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae uses a highly glycolytic metabolism, if glucose is available, through appropriately suppressing mitochondrial functions except for some of them such as Fe/S cluster biogenesis. Puf3p, a Pumillio family protein, plays a pivotal role in modulating mitochondrial activity, especially during fermentation, by destabilizing its target mRNAs and/or by repressing their translation. Puf3p preferentially binds to 8-nt conserved... Читать дальше...

Research on rice disease recognition based on improved SPPFCSPC-G YOLOv5 network

Plos.org

by Bo Yang, Lina Zhang, Jinping He

Spatial Pyramid Pooling (SPP) is important in capturing remote contextual information for pixel-level prediction tasks in scene-resolved detection of rice diseases. In this paper, the detection objects of the rice disease dataset used in this paper have almost the same target size and do not need to be passed through different filters to obtain different receptive fields of view. Therefore, this paper proposed a new pooling structure, SPPFCSPC-G, which split... Читать дальше...

Differential activation of mouse and human Panx1 channel variants

Plos.org

by Antonio Cibelli, Preeti Dohare, David C. Spray, Eliana Scemes

Pannexins are ubiquitously expressed in human and mouse tissues. Pannexin 1 (Panx1), the most thoroughly characterized member of this family, forms plasmalemmal membrane channels permeable to relatively large molecules, such as ATP. Although human and mouse Panx1 amino acid sequences are conserved in the presently known regulatory sites involved in trafficking and modulation of the channel, differences are reported in the N- and C-termini of the protein... Association between hours of work and subjective well-being. How do physicians compare to lawyers and accountants?

Plos.org

by Alberto Núñez-Elvira

Analyses of physician well-being typically rely on small and unrepresentative samples. In April 2011, the UK Office for National Statistics incorporated subjective well-being metrics (SWB) into the Annual Population Survey (APS), a well-established survey. This survey includes variables from the labor market, making APS an ideal source for measuring the association between work hours and SWB metrics and comparing among different professionals. Using APS data from 2011/12 to 2014/15... Читать дальше...

Lymphangiogenesis after nonvascularized lymph node transplantation: Lymphangiographic findings in mice and minipigs

Plos.org

by Kyoung Min Kim, Kun Yung Kim

The establishment of new connections after NVLNT (non-vascularized lymph node transplantation) is still poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate lymphatic connections after NVLNT using lymphangiography. In a mice model, 40 mice were allocated to undergo NVLNT or sham surgery. On day 21 after NVLNT, the lymphatic vessels were observed on near-infrared fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green. In a minipig model, 12 minipigs underwent NVLNT. Читать дальше...

Long-term care transitions during a global pandemic: Planning and decision-making of residents, care partners, and health professionals in Ontario, Canada

Plos.org

by Sarah Carbone, Whitney Berta, Susan Law, Kerry Kuluski

The COVID-19 pandemic appears to have shifted the care trajectories of many residents and care partners in Ontario who considered leaving LTC to live in the community for a portion or the duration of the pandemic. This type of care transition–from LTC to home care–was highly uncommon prior to the pandemic, therefore we know relatively little about the planning and decision-making involved. The aim of this study was to describe who... Читать дальше...

Aerobic exercise interventions to address impaired quality of life in patients with pituitary tumors

Plos.org

by Christopher S. Hong, Timothy R. Smith

Patients with pituitary tumors may experience persistent fatigue and reduced physical activity, based on subjective measures after treatment. These symptoms may persist despite gross total resection of their tumors and biochemical normalization of pituitary function. While reduced quality of life has been commonly acknowledged in pituitary tumor patients, there is a lack of studies on what interventions may be best implemented to ameliorate these issues... Untangling the effects of multiple exposures with a common reference group in an epidemiologic study: A practical revisit

Plos.org

by Robert E. Fontaine, Yulei He, Bao-Ping Zhu

When assessing multiple exposures in epidemiologic studies, epidemiologists often use multivariable regression models with main effects only to control for confounding. This method can mask the true effects of individual exposures, potentially leading to wrong conclusions. We revisited a simple, practical, and often overlooked approach to untangle effects of the exposures of interest, in which the combinations of all levels of the exposures of interest are recoded into a single... An agent-based nested model integrating within-host and between-host mechanisms to predict an epidemic

Plos.org

by Yuichi Tatsukawa, Md. Rajib Arefin, Kazuki Kuga, Jun Tanimoto

The COVID-19 pandemic has remarkably heightened concerns regarding the prediction of communicable disease spread. This study introduces an innovative agent-based modeling approach. In this model, the quantification of human-to-human transmission aligns with the dynamic variations in the viral load within an individual, termed “within-host” and adheres to the susceptible–infected–recovered (SIR) process, referred to as “between-host.”... Relationship between methods of monitoring training load and physiological indicators changes during 4 weeks cross-country skiing altitude training

Plos.org

by Yichao Yu, Dongye Li, Yifan Lu, Jing Mi

This study aimed to: (i) analyze the load characteristics of 4 weeks cross-country skiing altitude training; (ii) analyze the relationships between methods of monitoring training load and physiological indicators changes of elite male Chinese cross-country skiers during this period. Practitioners collected load data during 4 weeks of altitude training camp. Participants performed maximal oxygen uptake, lactate threshold, body composition, and skierg... Читать дальше...

Physiological changes of microalga Dunaliella parva under the treatment of PEG, CaCl2

Plos.org

by Qiman Zou, Limei Huang, Jinghui Gu, Bingbing Pang, Changhua Shang

Carotenoids are antioxidants, which reduce various chronic diseases of human, and have many industrial applications. The halophilic Dunaliella parva (D. parva) is rich in carotenoids. The compounds CaCl2 and PEG are the popular metabolic enhancers. To further enhance carotenogenesis, D. parva was treated with two compounds polyethylene glycol (PEG) and CaCl2. Application of CaCl2 and PEG enhanced the carotenoids contents... Читать дальше...

In silico analysis of TRPM4 variants of unknown clinical significance

Plos.org

by Svetlana I. Tarnovskaya, Anna A. Kostareva, Boris S. Zhorov

Background

TRPM4 is a calcium-activated channel that selectively permeates monovalent cations. Genetic variants of the channel in cardiomyocytes are associated with various heart disorders, such as progressive familial heart block and Brugada syndrome. About97% of all known TRPM4 missense variants are classified as variants of unknown clinical significance (VUSs). The very large number of VUSs is a serious problem in diagnostics and treatment of inherited heart diseases. Читать дальше...
