New Video Shows How Insanely Detailed Luke Getsy Is With His Players
Luke Getsy was probably the most surprising hire by Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus last season. Most felt he’d opt for a more experienced offensive coordinator to offset his own lack of knowledge about that side of the ball. Eberflus bucked the trends, opting to lure Getsy away from Green Bay. He had good reasons. The young assistant had a strong reputation for intelligence, detail, and ability to teach his players. Packers stars like Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams reportedly didn’t want to lose him.
His first year in Chicago was interesting. There were obvious setbacks. The passing attack was among the worst in the league, generating well under 200 yards per game. However, Getsy did implement Eberflus’ desired wide-zone rushing attack to perfect. Chicago finished 1st in rushing last season by a mile, eclipsing 3,000 yards. Getsy deserves credit for engineering that, despite obvious talent deficiencies. Now he goes into 2023 with a bolstered roster and a chance to further open up his system.
This hasn’t stopped him from being hands-on with every player. The latest episode of 1920 Football Drive proved that. He did everything from instructing Roschon Johnson how to run a wide-zone play properly, and then showing Tyler Scott the proper way to run routes.
Luke Getsy remains intent on never cutting corners.
He will make sure every single player knows what their job is supposed to be. When all 11 guys are on the same page every play, that leads to better execution. Better execution leads to more yards, more points, and more wins. The challenge is such things take time. He knew going into 2022 that things would be a struggle at first. His offensive system is notoriously complex. It takes time to learn. In such situations, there will be difficulties in generating offensive production. History proved that many times.
Kyle Shanahan, Gary Kubiak, and even Mike Shanahan had such experiences. The key is to continue instructing until everybody is on the same page. It will happen. The coach just needs the patience and dedication to get the message across. Luke Getsy seems more than up to that challenge. Yes, Justin Fields is the priority. Still, the other ten guys must also do their jobs to make the quarterback a success.
