Pakistan’s top court hears petition to halt Afghan migrants deportations

The highest court in Pakistan is now examining requests from human rights activists to stop the deportation of Afghan immigrants, happening alongside the ongoing expulsion of Afghan citizens from the country.

According to the report, the Supreme Court of Pakistan has initiated the examination of the request by human rights activists to halt the expulsion of Afghan refugees from Pakistan on Friday.

The assessment of the request by human rights activists to halt the forced expulsion of Afghan citizens has commenced, and more than a month has passed since the start of the process of forcibly deporting Afghan citizens from Pakistan.

Asim Gilani, the defence lawyer representing the human rights activists in this petition, told Reuters, “Since thousands suffer every day, I requested the court to expedite proceedings on this case last week.”

This lawyer mentioned that a panel of three judges examining this case had requested explanations from Pakistan’s interior and foreign affairs ministries and several high-ranking government and military officials.

These statements come at a time when Pakistan, in early October, gave a deadline to all illegal migrants in the country to leave by November 1st; otherwise, they will first be detained and then deported.

It’s worth noting that, according to government statistics, Pakistan hosts over four million Afghan migrants, of which approximately 1.7 million do not possess legal documents.
