The BJP appeared to be hedging its bets by not projecting a chief-ministerial face in its poll campaign. Instead it had fielded several veterans including Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar and the party stalwart Kailash Vijayvargiya, who is also considered Chouhan's rival, in the state polls.
