We’ve bought a house but the damp is causing a massive issue – we’ve been quoted £15k to fix it, so are do it ourselves
A NEW homeowner has revealed that she and her partner are “smashing up the house” due to a damp problem that they have.
The couple have revealed that they only bought their “damp free” house around 10 weeks ago and are already experiencing issues.
They had a survey conducted on their home before buying it, and the results came back that the house didn’t have a damp issue.
However, not long after they moved in the pair noticed damp patches started to build up on their walls.
The couple, who go by the name of Tree and Boat on TikTok, have taken to their social media channel to share their issues.
The account is captioned: “Just us trying to fix our 100 year old terraced house by smashing it up.”
They also revealed that their roof is 100 years old and “leaking everywhere.”
One particular video was captioned: “Is anyone else in the same boat?
“The roof is a priority as well as the damp but we have to tackle one thing at a time and damp is dangerous to health so that’s jumped ahead and we are paying a company to do some temporary repairs on the roof.”
The video shows their damp patches, as well as pictures of what their house looks like.
Narrating over the video, the homeowner says: “Day three of smashing up the house to fix the damp.
“So this is going to be a little bit different, I want to explain a few things.
“So we bought this house about 10 weeks ago and it was at the top end of our budget.
“And we said if the survey comes back spot on, we will buy it. It’s fine.
“As long as there’s nothing that needs doing.”
She then presents pictures of the inside of their house which show it’s been newly renovated.
Very shortly after moving in the pair discovered damp in their home[/caption] They decided to take matters into their own hands and “smash up” their house[/caption] They are also having issues with their roof as well[/caption]The homeowner continues: “You’ll see the inside, nothing needs done inside. It’s lovely.
“And so yes, the survey came back all green for damp. No damp anywhere, it’s been damp proofed.
“It was dry. And so we were like, great.”
However, she then points the camera to some damp patches which have developed on their walls.
She says: “What is this? That is damp. That is a wet spot.
“We noticed this not long after we moved in, we got a moisture metre and it said yes.
“They [surveyors] said also the roof is going to need some repairs, however it’s acceptable.
“Um, the roof is the original roof from 100 years ago and it’s leaking everywhere.
“And now we’ve been quoted £15,000 to fix that.
“But we spent all the money in the house, so that’s why we’re doing everything ourselves.”
The video has been viewed thousands of times, with many people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts.
One wrote: “That’s awful! Is there anything you can do against the surveyor!?”
To which the homeowners replied: “We are currently in dispute with the surveyors, we may need a lawyer.”
Another added: “Condensation/air flow issues.. possibly sweat spots if wall were lime plaster finish.
“And if walls have been painted in oil based paint will look.”
A third said: “How are you still calm? I’d be an absolute mess!!”
To which the homeowner replied: “I am a mess, I’m currently on my 4th gin of the evening and it’s a Wednesday night.”
