Peatlands, wetlands that resemble marshes, store ten times more CO2 than a forest. There careful management could therefore prove a key component of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, nearly all peatlands in France are damaged, often as a result of being drained to be turned into farmland or to extract peat for use as a fuel or fertilizer, threatening to release vast quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere.
